About the statistics shown in the factsheets
(1) https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32007R0862
Eurostat produced the Demographic change in Europe — Country factsheets for explanatory purposes to provide basic information about individual Member States and to accompany the Report from the Commission on the impact of demographic change. The format of the factsheets is different from regular Eurostat publications. Consequently, Eurostat discourages the use of these factsheets for research or analytical purposes. To simplify the information and to keep them fit-for-purpose, the factsheets do not include detailed notes on quality, or on methodological issues such as revisions or differences in definition. For research or in-depth analysis, users are advised to access directly the data tables listed below and the Statistics Explained Articles on the Eurostat web site:
• Population: demography, population projections, census, asylum & migration https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/population/overview
• Labour Market, including Labour Force Survey https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/labour-market/overview
• SDG 10 - Reduced inequalities https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/SDG_10_-_Reduced_inequalities
• GDP per capita, consumption per capita and price level indices https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/GDP_per_capita,_consumption_per_capita_and_price_level_indices
These pages contain analytical articles and the specific datasets from the Eurostat database that explain the methodological and quality considerations related to the statistics. They provide users with a clear understanding of the statistics and of any underlying issues that might impact on their interpretation. In particular, they provide information on any statistics that should be used with caution, explaining as well the reasons for this.
Eurostat applies the migration related definitions from Regulation (EC) No 862/2007 on Community statistics on migration and international protection (1) that include both migration flows to and from the EU as a whole and between different EU Member States. The terminology in the regulation is based on an international standard. In particular, the Regulation defines immigration as the action by which a person establishes his or her usual residence in the territory of a Member State for a period that is, or is expected to be, of at least 12 months, having previously been usually resident in another Member State or a third country. The usual residence means the place at which a person normally spends the daily period of rest, regardless of temporary absences for purposes of recreation, holiday, visits to friends and relatives, business, medical treatment or religious pilgrimage or, in default, the place of legal or registered residence. The immigration (emigration) figures refer to the place of origin (destination) of the immigrant (emigrant).
The old-age dependency ratio is calculated as the ratio of the population aged 65 years and over to the population aged 20 to 64 years.
Population projections statistics come from the 2019-based population projections. Statistics from the Eurostat population projections are displayed by dotted lines or are shown in lighter colours.
