GM: Genetically modified

All organisms have specific genetic make up called DNA

• Genetic Engineering– alters DNA of an organism’s genome

• GM foods exist in almost all areas of food production– Crops, animals, and dairy

• Scientist altar the DNA of organisms

– Bacteria– Yeast– Plants (crops)– Fish– Mammals

Why?

• Taste and Quality• Resistance to pests • Increased shelf life• Resistance to harsh environmental conditions• Resistance to herbicides – “Round up Ready” Seeds

How?

• Mutation• Insertion – horizontal gene transfer– Used by attaching the gene being inserted to a

virus• Deletion of genes

Who says it’s safe?

You call that a tomato?

Tomatoes are picked when they are still green and unripe only to be injected with chemicals to give them a bright red color.

Designed to increase revenue with in the Food Industry

GMO’s in the grocery store

• Over 90% of products sold contain GMO’s

• Shopping organic for products located on the outskirts of the store – Less likely to be GM

• Cows are feed GM diets instead of grass– Contaminating your milk and beef
