Dearest CBI Family,
As one spends time in Galveston, one will come to hear a variety of stories about our
beloved Rabbi Henry Cohen whether as an inspired orator or trusted confidant, whether as
a sound spiritual guide or social justice leader, whether as a devoted family member or
reliable friend. In addition to those things, you may have heard — as I did — that Rabbi
Cohen was also an avid bicyclist.
Initially, this mode of transportation may seem like an odd choice for a man who ensured
his presence and the Judaism he embodied were felt all over town. Yet, having biked
routinely for the last couple of months, I can say that biking is much more than a physical
exercise, improving the body. Cycling is also a spiritual discipline and a community
practice, improving these aspects of life as well with every passing mile.
Biking as a Spiritual Discipline (i.e. A View from the Bike Lane of Life)...
Biking grants the rider a spiritual perspective, seeing the road of life as never before. For those in the “fast lanes
of life,” the road under your constantly turning tire may appear mostly clear of rusted nails and broken glass,
of small pieces of rubber and metal as well as other trash, allowing you to continue your path forward
unabated. Unfortunately, that is not the view from the bike lane, from the “edges of our society.”
Bike lanes are cluttered with debris. For those who travel it, we must work harder to avoid it, as we typically
cannot afford to carry a spare with us. What’s worse is that most of that trash did not come from bikers; it
came from car drivers and passengers who seem to not understand or care that what goes out of their
windows lands directly in our path, impeding our way forward.
Thus, spiritually speaking, cycling facilitates a healthy departure from one’s comfort zone/lane. In doing so, we
gain a valuable perspective in our lives that may foster empathy for those traveling beside us. Though by
different means and speeds, we nevertheless share the same goal/destination. Thus, we may abide by the
golden rule of the road: “Clear the way for others and others may clear the way for you.”
Biking as a Community Practice (i.e. Beyond Observation)…
Biking also helps us engage more as a community. As the sun rises or sets, Seawall becomes lined with those
who make Galveston both a beautiful and safe place to reside: the crew who clears the beaches of waste,
engineers making upgrades and fixes, lifeguards initiating or concluding a day of saving lives, restaurant
workers on their way to extend hospitality, Galveston police serving and protecting, etc.
Sure, we may see these individuals from our cars. But, in a car, it’s hard to slow down enough to express a
word of appreciation for these care givers of our community. On a bike, not only is it possible to say
something, but — like standing next to a stranger on an elevator — it almost seems rude not to. Thus, days on
a bike are filled with welcomed exchanges from strangers and friends that make our city feel more like home.
Maybe for both these spiritual and communal benefits, Rabbi Cohen biked...
After all, seeing those on the fringes of society as well as engaging with them and others to bring community
closer together were cornerstones of his rabbinate. May we continue his legacy of learning and love. For
opportunities to do just that, please take a look inside this month’s bulletin for CBI programs and services
intended to strengthen the body, mind and soul! As Marry Poppin may have sung, if she biked, “Let’s go ride a
bike, whether as an adult or tike! Let’s go ride a bike and keep on moving… forward!”
Gratefully yours,

Divrei haNasi: Words of the President
Only 365 Days until July 2018: CBI’s 150th Anniversary!
Dearest Congregation,
The number “18” is symbolic for Chai: alive, life, living things. On behalf of the Board of Trustees,
Rabbi Marshal and myself, we invite your participation not only for this extraordinary weekend in
July 2018, but throughout the year and even now. Congregant ideas have grown into Teams
working on projects, all culminating in 2018! We are one year away from this joyful celebration
and I would like to share a few updates with you.
History Team: our illustrious Rabbi Emeritus, Jimmy Kessler, is busily updating CBI’s History. He has
told me of a surprise he has for everyone! Details coming!
Services & Ceremonies Team: CBI has already begun the process of requesting the addition of Rabbi
Cohen’s name on Avenue O through a conversation with Mayor Yarbrough and his support staff. I’m
hoping everyone has a “friend” currently residing on Avenue O, as we need signatures for 51% of
households along this Galveston artery. With your assistance over this summer, the addition of Rabbi
Henry Cohen Avenue becomes a reality!
Cultural Programs Team: We have secured Matisyahu at The Grand 1894 Opera House for a CBI Benefit Concert, 28 July 2018.
Thank you to our Underwriters and Sponsors. We still have 15 more sponsor packages available and need to sell these ASAP.
Please get ahold of Melissa if you are able and willing ($180 for Elite Seat and VIP Dessert Reception Pass).
Building Renovations Team: Our House of Worship was passionately and lovingly designed by Tibor Beerman, a Holocaust
survivor. Our CBI reflects his dreams of Judaism’s great strengths. Throughout the decades, the CBI home has offered each of us
the opportunity to fully experience Judaism, through comfort, security, and love. CBI has also weathered decades of Galveston’s
“finest” weather. The Building Renovation Committee has had a full assessment done which will help prioritize the upgrades and
improvements soon to be coming.
Capital Campaign Team: During Rosh Hashanah 2016/5777, Barbara Sasser introduced a Capital Campaign, with a $3.6 million
goal. Contributions have come in many forms from cash, stocks & bonds, wills, property to be sold... all working toward
achieving that shared goal. It appears the building needs more than a few band aids to make her compliant and current. If you
would like to make a donation to the Capital Campaign for these necessary upgrades and more, we are happy to work with you!
Judaism offers a myriad of ways to rejoice in Torah and to engage in one’s own personal experience with God... with CBI’s
legacy... with Rabbi Cohen’s lasting mitzvahs… with our history... with the enduring inspiration of Tibor Beerman… also
with our dynamic culture of art, music, and song! The opportunity for own connection to Judaism continues through you!
Sandy Richbook — CBI President
Shalom Chaveirim!
By the time you read this, you should have received your Sisterhood membership letter. Please take a
few minutes to fill it out and send it back in the envelope provided (don't forget your check!). If you
haven't received the mailing yet, please let us know. We want to make sure we have the correct
contact information, so we can let you know about the new programs for this year.
This month, we give special thanks to Suzie Reiswerg for her dedication in organizing Oneg sponsors
these past two years. She's been a gem and I know you're going to miss her phone calls to encourage
you to sponsor a Shabbat Oneg. But don't worry — she's handing over the phone list to Susan
Steinberg, who will be reaching out for your help. If you have a special life event coming up, or a
special someone you'd like to honor, consider sponsoring an Oneg.
Our Sisterhood Kick-Off Event will be in August and, although we don’t have all the details yet, stay
tuned… and stay in touch! This is your Sisterhood!
B’Shalom,

CBI YOUTH: LET OUR YOUTH LEAD THE WAY!!!
DT Panter — CBI’s Jewish Youth Area Coordinator (JYAC)
We are grateful to the following CBI family members for providing Oneg this month:
Rabbi Marshal Klaven B.J. & Buddy Herz Tammy Shinder
in honor of CBI Staff & Board in honor of Buddy’s birthday in honor of her birthday
07/07/2017 07/21/2017 07/28/2017
Also. thank you, Susan Steinberg for organizing this effort.
If you have a special date/person you’d like to honor by providing food for Oneg,
please contact Susan at: susansw40@sbcglobal.net or 281.797.3216.
Friday, 09 June 2017. JYAC Fellow DT Panter teaches
our youth about the Menorah (mentioned in that
Shabbat’s portion of B’ha-alotecha) through making
edible ones during Family Shabbat.
To my CBI Friends,
Shalom chaveirim!! This month has been busy.
With the help of Pat and his assistant Jose, along
with Matt Yellen, Rebecca Yellen, Jessica Yellen,
Robert Goldhirsh and Barbara Sasser, we were able
to install new white boards in all of our
classrooms. Goodbye 1953 and hello 2017! Thank
you for your hard work.
Enrollment for next year’s Religious School and the
application for Madrichim went out last month.
Remember the deadline for both is 15 July 2017.
There are several significant changes in the way Religious School will
run next year. Rabbi Marshal Klaven and Katherine Druckman are
working on an experiential education program for our 6th-8th
graders called JoURney, encouraging them to find their place in the
Journey Story of our people from immigration to acculturation to
mobilization of our values. The Religious School day will also be
different, starting at 10 am with T’filah and ending at 12:30 pm.
More details to come at our first parents meeting 10 September 2017.
I was also able to take some time and visit our young congregants at
Greene Family Camp. All of them talked about what a great time
they’re having. All I can say is fun was had! We have posted some
pictures and videos to our CBI Facebook page!
I finished my month with a trip to Jackson, MS where I attended the
ISJL Conference. After meeting all of the new fellows, I can say, no
matter who we get they should be able to help us in our endeavor to
make 2017 – 2018 Religious School year the best one yet. As always,
I came home excited, reenergized and ready to get back to work.
So what’s next? Check out the CBI Calendar on pages 9-10. Also
please remember if you have anything fun going on — birthday, play,
sporting event, or if you would just like to stop by or meet for lunch
— please let me know. I am always looking for an excuse to get out
of the office!
Have a great month!

In addition to honoring your loved one’s memory through a thoughtful and lasting gift to CBI and its mission, we —
as your extended family — encourage you to attend the Erev (Evening) Shabbat Service immediately following the
anniversary of your loved one’s death. During the Friday night’s service, which starts at 6:00 pm, your loved one’s
name will be recited for a blessing prior to the communal recitation of the Kaddish Yatom (the Mourner’s Kaddish).

CBI MISSION STATEMENT:
Congregation B’nai Israel is an inviting, intimate and inclusive community of faith, deeply dedicated to strengthening
Jewish identities and Jewish values in the greater Galveston Bay area. Through Reform Jewish study and prayer,
community engagement and cultural programs, our Congregation encourages and energizes the spiritual fulfillment of all
its members. As we strive to deepen the relationships within our Congregation, we actively reach out to widen our
connections with the greater community, sharing with them the beauty of our Jewish heritage: “pursuing justice, loving
mercy and walking humbly with God.” (Micah 6:8)
CBI CORE VALUES:
Communication: As an inviting, intimate, and inclusive community of faith, CBI values the voices of our individual
members, who wish to offer their perspectives and passions, their time and talents, their souls and support for the benefit
of enriching the entire Congregation, whether inside or outside the Temple.
Collaboration: More than our sacred place, wherein we assemble for meaningful programs, CBI values the thoughtful
interaction -- the collaboration -- of our people. From babies to bubbies, our community of faith consciously cultivates
transformative relationships meant to inspire communal and personal direction and action.
Innovation: Through our respectful communication and intentional collaboration, CBI fosters and values a spirit of
innovation within the lives of our individual members as well as the Galveston community at large. Infusing a sense of
renewal in tradition is how we – at Congregation B’nai Israel – make our world a healthier place to reside.
