Cloning and Stem Cells Jeopardy!

Waterford Union High School

Rules

• Each team sends one person per turn. They cannot get help from their team

• First to “buzz” in gets 15 seconds to answer. • If the first person to buzz cannot get the answer, the

second team can buzz in. Once they buzz in, they too have 15 seconds. They also cannot get help.

• You either gain or lose points on each turn.• If no team buzzes within 10 seconds, the question

ends and the answer is given.

This & That

Early Experiments

• This researcher tied a salamander zygote in half to show that cells did not lose DNA as they divided.

• Spemann

Early Experiments

• These researchers moved frog egg nuclei from one cell to another.

• Briggs & King

Early Experiments

• This researcher moved an adult frog nuclei from the intestinal cells to an enucleated egg to create the first cloned animals.

• Gurdon

Early Experiments

• This was the first cloned mammal• Dolly the Sheep

Early Experiments

• It took this many attempts to create Dolly the Sheep

• 277

Stem Cells

• This is the kind of stem cell found in your body right now

• Adult or somatic stem cells

Stem Cells• This kind of stem cell comes from a blastocyst

• Embryonic stem cell

Stem Cells

• This kind of stem cell is pluripotent• Embryonic Stem Cell

Stem Cells

• This kind of stem cell has the lowest risk of rejection after transplant

• Adult stem cell

Stem Cells

• This kind of stem cell is illegal• None

Cells & Stuff

• This is a fertilized egg. • Zygote

Cells & Stuff

• These are the “caps” at the end of a chromosome.

• Telomeres

Cells & Stuff

• This is what happens to telomeres as cells age• They shorten

Cells & Stuff

• This is necessary for a cell to start dividing after a nucleus has been inserted.

• An electric shock

Cells & Stuff

• A young cell will have telomeres that are ______

• Longer

1 Cell, 2 Cells, 4 Cells…

• This is a fertilized egg• Zygote

1 Cell, 2 Cells, 4 Cells…

• This is shown below:

• A morulla

1 Cell, 2 Cells, 4 Cells…

• This is shown below:

• Blastocyst

1 Cell, 2 Cells, 4 Cells…

• This is found inside the blastocyst• Inner cell mass

1 Cell, 2 Cells, 4 Cells…

• This is the source of embryonic stem cells• Inner cell mass of a blastocyst

Endo, Ecto, Meso

• This is the source of skin cells• Ectoderm

Endo, Ecto, Meso

• This is the source of muscle cells• Mesoderm

Endo, Ecto, Meso

• This is the source of the lungs• Endoderm

Endo, Ecto, Meso

• This is the source of brain cells• Ectoderm

Endo, Ecto, Meso

• This is the source of bone cells• Mesoderm

This & That

• This is the president that banned federal funds for new embryonic stem cell research

• President George W. Bush

This & That

• This is the president that overturned the ban on the use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research

• President Obama

This & That

• This is the university at which embryonic stem cells were first isolated

• UW-Madison

This & That

• This is the researcher who first isolated embryonic stem cells

• James Thomson

This & That

• This is the researcher who first reverted adult cells back into embryonic stem cells.
