HOW THE EYES SEE CLEARLY

•  Shaped like a sphere •  Light rays enter eye and converge on retina

(back of eye) •  Brain perceives image

Nearsightedness

•  Can see things clearly far away •  Close-up is blurry •  Eyeball is shortened •  Light rays enter eye and converge behind

retina (back of eye)

Farsightedness

•  Cornea (clear, outer layer of eye) is shaped like a football

•  Distorts refraction of light rays

Astigmatism

•  Lens becomes rigid •  Can’t !ex to see up close •  Need to hold "ne print far away •  Bifocals

Presbyopia

•  Genetics •  Age •  Poor habits •  Muscles become tight distorting shape of

eyeball and lens •  Insufficient blood and energy !ow: lack of

nourishment to maintain healthy eyes

•  Important point for eye problems: blurred vision, dimness, night blindness, twitching, redness, early stage cataracts, glaucoma

•  BL-1 and BL-2 are important and frequently used points for treatment of eye disorders

•  Inner eyebrow, feel for small depression

•  Do one hour before or after eating •  Drink lots of water •  Preferable to abstain from alcohol

•  Root of life and mother of all Qi •  Stores essence or Jing •  Excretes waste and toxins through urine •  Massage to strengthen Kidney Qi and Jing

and to help clear toxins

Kidneys

•  Soles of both feet •  Imagine horizontal line

dividing foot in half horizontally –  From tip of big toe to base of heel

•  Imagine vertical line dividing foot in half vertically

•  Left foot: Kidney point in top left quadrant –  Right foot: Kidney point in top

right quadrant

•  Imagine another horizontal line following bottom of ball of foot

•  Kidney point is below this line (red) and above halfway line

•  About as wide as your thumb •  Place thumb on vertical line,

with two thirds of the thumb in top left quadrant and one third in top right quadrant of left sole

•  Opens into the eyes •  Liver stores blood •  Smooths the !ow of Qi •  Controls the tendons

TCM Liver Functions

•  Massage to support breakdown and clearing of toxins from body

•  Improve liver function to store blood, send blood to muscles and tendons, ensure smooth !ow of Qi

•  Support liver’s role of “opening into the eyes”

brain •  Massage to get Qi, blood and craniosacral !uid !owing

FACE POINT

•  Hold tension in muscles surrounding eyes and face

•  Massage to promote smooth !ow of Qi to areas surrounding the eyes

•  Bonus: helps keep you looking younger!

LYMPH DRAINAGE POINT

•  Lymph drainage for armpit area •  Lymphatic system plays important role in

immune system •  Need movement to move lymph !uid •  Re!exology point is often very painful •  Improves energy !ow and clears toxins

•  Use knuckle of RIGHT index "nger to press and stroke TOWARDS you

•  Lift and repeat •  Press hard enough to feel it,

but not so hard to bruise (top of foot is delicate)

•  Now try your left foot

•  Kidney – 60 seconds each foot •  Liver – 30 seconds right foot •  Eye – 20 to 30 intense seconds each foot •  Brain – 20 to 30 intense seconds each foot •  Face – 20 to 30 seconds each foot •  Lymphatic Drainage – 15 strokes each foot

Recommended Massage

•  Every other day: eye, kidney and liver points (2.5 minutes)

•  Once a week: brain, face and lymphatic drainage points (1 minute)

•  While you watch TV, lying in bed, waiting for water to boil, etc.

Effortless Practice

Before: –  Eye points very sensitive, especially edges, around

joints, below toe pad –  Feel hard to touch, like rock or callous under skin

After: –  3 weeks, feet should feel less sensitive –  Eye points feel more supple, softer, like blood is !owing through
