Virginia agriCulture in tHe global marKetPlaCe
2017 was a strong year for Virginia agriculture and forestry exports, which totaled $2.63 billion in value and solidified the Commonwealth’s position as the fourth largest exporter of agricultural goods on the East Coast.
The top three export markets for Virginia in 2017 were China, Canada and Switzerland, all filling the same spots they have held since 2013. China imported more than $584 million in agricultural purchases, while Canada totaled over $326 million and Switzerland took in approximately $208 million in 2017. China’s imports from Virginia decreased by 5.04 percent over 2016 levels while, Canada’s and Switzerland’s import increased by 10.38 and 8.79 respectively.
These countries and many others are purchasing a variety of Virginia agricultural commodities, including soybeans and grains, tobacco, pork and poultry, wood products, seafood, and prepared foods. The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services promotes exports of these and other products around the world via their Virginia offices and a global network of trade offices and representatives in Canada, Mexico, Europe, the Middle East, India, China, and Southeast Asia.
