June 15, 2016Dear Players & Parents,
On behalf of the Suffolk County Coaches’ Association, I welcome you to our annual “Awards Banquet”, honoring the most outstanding players in all of Suffolk County. Congratulations to every athlete here tonight for all of your accomplishments, and thank you for helping to maintain the excellent quality of Suffolk County Lacrosse.
Our congratulations to Ward Melville H.S.,
the “A” County Champions, coached by Jay Negus,
Shoreham Wading River H.S., the “B” County Champions,
coached by Mike Taylor, and Babylon H.S., the “C” County
Champions, coached by John Greaney . Long Island Lacrosse continues to be recognized by college coaches as a premier hotbed of high school lacrosse in the country, and you players here with us this evening represent the “Cream of the Crop,” I hope you enjoy tonight’s program.
Sincerely, George Searing

Early North American explorers found different forms of lacrosse widely played by the Indians. The French settlers gave the game its present name because the sticks the Indians used had a resemblance to the crosier (la crosse) carried at ceremonies by a bishop as a symbol of pastoral office.
The first use of the word "crosse" in reference to the game was made in 1636 by a Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brebeuf, who saw the Hurons play it near Thunder Bay, Ontario, and mentioned it in a report to his ecclesiastical superiors. He said nothing of the technique of the game, and it was left for another Jesuit, Pierre de Charlevoix, to describe it as played by the Algonquins in 1721.
The Indians used a stick 3 or 4 feet long with a netted loop at one end (in some areas two smaller sticks were used, one in each hand). Even in daylong contests, early reports say, the ball rarely touched the ground. The ball was about the size of a modern tennis ball and was made either of wood or of deerskin stuffed with deer hair.
Indian lacrosse was a mass game. Most teams were made up of about a hundred players and sometimes of more than a thousand. Distance between goals usually was between 500 yards and a half-mile, but on occasion the goals were several miles apart.
Some tribes used a single pole or tree or rock for a goal, and scores were made by a hit with the ball. Other tribes used two goal posts, 6 to 9 feet apart, and the ball had to pass between them. There were no sidelines, and play ranged over the countryside in all directions. Games lasted as long as two or three days, starting at sunup and ending at sundown. If a brave seemed to be playing below top pace, the squaws of his tribe would rush to him on the field and beat him with switches. Players wore only breechcloths and some decorative paint; they usually played barefoot. Lacrosse was played not only for recreation but also as a means of training warriors. The roughness of the game served to accustom players to conditions of close combat, and its length to develop endurance for war and hunting parties.

Suffolk County Lacrosse Coaches’ Association2016 Awards Dinner
Most Outstanding Player AwardsThe SCLCA is pleased to recognize the most outstanding player at each position for Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3. The SCLCA will be donating $2,000 in the name of the recipients to charitable causes selected by the award winners.
Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation Scholarship AwardThe LIMLF created a scholarship program to recognize outstanding high school lacrosse players in the Long Island Metropolitan area. The recipient must be an All-County player, have an outstanding grade point average, and a strong community service background. The recipient will receive $1,000 along with a plaque in their honor.
Eric Sopracasa Scholarship AwardEric Sopracasa graduated from Sachem High School in 1995. As a senior, he received All-Division, All-County, and All-American honors. As captain, he helped his team to the Suffolk County, Long Island, Southern Regional and State Championship final.
Upon graduation, Eric went to the University of Massachusetts to continue his studies and to pursue the game he loved. Throughout college he continued to grow, to be an inspiration to others, to be a leader among his fellow athletes, and to build upon a brilliant career, while earning the admiration and adulation of those that played with him or had the opportunity to see him play. On May 5th, 1999, Eric Sopracasa tragically passed away during lacrosse practice at the University of Massachusetts.
The Eric Sopracasa Scholarship Award has been established to honor the player, who through determination and character serves as a role model and inspiration to fellow athletes. The scholarship is in the amount of $1,000.
John Fernandez Courage AwardsJohn Fernandez is a graduate of Rocky Point High School and the United States Military Academy. John was captain of his lacrosse team at West Point. Lt. Fernandez was deployed to Iraq, where on April 3, 2003 he was severely wounded after a US plane dropped a 500 pound bomb on his Humvee. Somehow, though, the bomb which ripped through his Humvee spared Fernandez, it took the lives of three fellow soldiers and injured seven

others. Fernandez eventually lost his legs due to the incident. John has since battled back, learning to walk again with the use of prosthetic limbs. He has persevered to the point where he now plays lacrosse again, and more importantly has continued on with his life – getting married and becoming a father.
The SCLCA has established awards to recognize Suffolk County lacrosse players who have overcome difficult circumstances in their lives in the same spirit as John Fernandez.
Raymond Enners AwardRaymond Enners was a three sport star athlete at Half Hollow Hills High School in the early 1960’s, and an All-American Lacrosse player at the United States Military Academy. Unfortunately, his story is a short one and comes with a sad ending …… an above average student, gifted athlete, and a war hero who was killed in Vietnam after saving the life of a fellow soldier. He was posthumously honored with the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.
Enners earned nine varsity letters: two in basketball, three in football, and four in lacrosse. He was a four-year varsity starter, two-time captain, and twice led his high school to a county championship. As a senior, he set the county record for assists with 81 in only 13 games!
He played lacrosse at West Point, earning honorable mention All-American honors as a senior in 1967. He was selected to play in the prestigious North-South Collegiate All-Star Game.
Enners left for Vietnam in July of 1968. Two months later, Lt. Enners was killed in action in a rice paddy near the town of Ha Thanh. Accounts of the incident state that three times Enners ignored enemy fire to reach a wounded squad leader, Sgt. Alfred Matheson of Huntington. Moments after he successfully recovered Sgt. Matheson, he led an attack on the North Vietnamese. It was then that Enners, at 22 years of age, was fatally wounded.
Raymond Enners was not only a great lacrosse player; he was a great leader and a great American. The NCAA honors his name each year with the Lt. Raymond Enners Award, which is presented to the top Division 1 collegiate player.
The Suffolk County Lacrosse Coaches Association honors Lt. Raymond Enners in a similar fashion, presenting an award to the player in Suffolk County who best combines exceptional lacrosse ability with courage, teamwork, and leadership.
