My Teaching Philosophy

The 10 INTASC Principles and Supporting Examples

Conclusion

My Teaching Philosophy

Principle 1

The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and

structures of the disciplines he or she teaches and can create learning

experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful to

students.

Making Subject Matter Meaningful

Cross-Curricular Connections

Principle 2

The teacher understands how children learn and develop and provide learning opportunities that support their

intellectual, social, and personal development.

Discussing Observations

Balloon Rocket Battles

Debrief as Whole Group•Describe what happened when the rockets collided.•Why did this happen?•Why did we mark the center spot?•How does a greater force affect the speed or direction of something of a lesser force?•What happens to two forces of the same size but opposite in direction?

Principle 3

The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to

learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to

diverse learners.

problem solving, and performance skills.

Principle 5

The teacher uses an understanding of individual and

group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages

positive social interaction, active engagement in learning,

and self-motivation.

interaction in the classroom.

feedback.

Principle 7

The teacher plans instruction based on knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and

curriculum goals.

Connection

Principle 8

The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies

to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development

of the learner.

studies test

Principle 9

The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluates the effects of

his/her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals

in the learning community) and who actively seeks out opportunities

to grow professionally.

Self-Reflection Highlights

3-17-11Overall, I was fairly pleased with how my lesson went today. The students seemed engaged by the topic of the article and stayed on task for the entire lesson. Furthermore, the goals and objectives of my lesson were met. Ideally, I would like to do a follow-up lesson with another article and see how well my students can attempt the process on their own or in pairs.

3-29-11

I wish I would have told them that they will now have a more keen sense for finding sentence fragments when peer editing each others’ work. I think I will mention that today

at the start of my ELA lesson as a review from yesterday.

Week 3

One goal that I would like to achieve this week is to

spend some time exploring the capabilities

of the ActiveBoard.

Week 8

This week I am going to work on giving clear instructions

during my lessons.

Week 6

My main goal this week is to make cross connections between at least three

subject areas.

Week 9

I am definitely getting more comfortable with correcting

inappropriate behavior.

Principle 10

The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents and

agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning

and well-being.

Conclusion

As a teacher, I must

continue to learn and

grow myself, and

model being a life-

long learner for my

students.
