Ch 8 Canada Shifts Focus 1980 and Beyond

Learning Outcomes- Today you will identify societal changes in Canada after 1980. You will also explore how multiculturalism/social policies affect minorities, and women groups in Canada.

You will also graph immigration statistics and use evidence to draw conclusions.

Task 1. 

Use Figure 8-5 and GLM 20--

Use the Pie Graph to Recreate the info.(1961-1970)

Task 2.  From 8-6 Use Year 2006 and graph again estimating percentages on GLM-20.

Task 2.Read 246-247

1. Looking at your graph,(1960/70) determine the top 3 immigrant areas.2. Look at your 2006 graph determine the top 3 immigrant areas.3. Describe the changes in immigration patterns. 4. What has the gov. done to cause this change?5. How has Multiculturalism affected Canadians?6. Do you agree with this policy and the ideas it is fostering?

Today you identify how Aboriginals have responded to challenges.  You will identify positive changes, areas of challenge, and uniquely interesting aspects of Aboriginal life.

Minus- Areas they feel still needed change or were fighting for during this time..

Interesting- Unique events, or aspects of Native Culture...

8-3 Constitution and Discord in Quebec

Review-- Name 2 positive gains First Nations made in the 1980's

Identify two frustrations of the Native peoples during the 1980's

Preview--- What do you know about Quebec and its relationship with Canada?

Talk with a partner- List three points..

Learning Outcomes- Today you will study one of two Canadian issues:

A. Identifying/explaining the series of events  that led to Quebec attempting to separate from Canada (217-221 and 257 and 264)

B. Identifying/explaining the patriation of the Constitution and attempts to include Quebec.(258-264)

Task 1

You will be assigned either A or B.

Teacher- Mr. Crocker will give a verbal summary of both events..

Task 2

You will read 257-262--Including vocab,pictures,timelines...

While reading take notes put  in chronological order important events.

Task  A- Should end with 1995 Referendum

Task B-Should end with the Clarity Act..

Find a partner and compare and discuss.. Find one more partner and compare/adjust again.

Using GLM 8-- Write out the Flow of events with brief explanations..

Task 4-  

You will be matched up with an A or B and will be asked to teach the flow of events leading up to the Clarity Bill and Referendum of 1995.  Your partner will copy your info onto the back of their GLM-8..

Learning Outcomes- Today you will identify solutions by two Prime Ministers to address economic issues in Canada.

You will also define and identify the process of Globalization..

Canada was suffering from high unemployment, high debt and was headed for recession in the 1980's. Two Prime Minister used different economic strategies to pull Canada's economy out of this economic slump.

Task 1: Pg.265-267

Mulroney/Conservatives-- Explain what the strategy was and how it was supposed to help the economy:

1. Trickle-Down Approach2. Open for Business3. Free Trade/US4. NAFTA

On the White Board-  Add an explanations of each of these strategies.....

Task 2- Read 268

Chretien and the Liberals took over and tried a number of strategies to help the economy: Identify/Explain results1. Inject 6 billion of tax dollars into economy2.Elimination of social services3. Cut Transfer Payments4.Increased Safety Net
