Established hegemony over other Phoenician

settlements

At peak, influence extended to Western

Mediterranean

Rivalry with Greece due to both countries

claiming the island of Sicily as their own

Crushed by the Roman Empire during the 3rd and

final Punic War (149BC - 146 BC)

Language

Carthaginians spoke Punic, a Semitic language, a

language family of large middle eastern origin.

Economy

Trade routes mostly by sea

Empire depended heavily on import of silver, lead

and tin ore.

For manufacture of bronze products

Economy

Produced a wide range of finely embroidered stuff

and accessories

Practiced highly advanced agricultural methods

and produced fine wine (raisin wine for Rome)

and raised fine horses.

Manufactured a highly-valuable colouring called

the Tyrian Purple
