Laudato SÍI. ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ECOLOGY
138. Ecology studies the relationship between
living organisms and the environment in which
they develop. This necessarily entails reflection
and debate about the conditions required for
the life and survival of society, and the honesty
needed to question certain models of
development, production and consumption. It
cannot be emphasized enough how everything
is interconnected.

Passion Projects
Passion Projects are magical. They are designed to tap into the things that make our students’ heart race, their eyes light up, and their engagement increase to maximum levels.

Passion Projects
Project One: Goal 12: RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTIONEnsure sustainable consumption and production patterns
Each year, an estimated 1/3 of all food produced – equivalent to 1.3 billion tons
worth around $1 trillion – ends up rotting in the bins of consumers and
retailers, or spoiling due to poor transportation and harvesting practices.
What can we do? How might an awareness campaign shed light on food
waste? How can we improve our food consumption to reduce waste? What the
opportunities and challenges that a food drive present?
Project One: Ways to Present Findings
A physical or digital info poster highlighting important ideas,
events and actions that can be done locally
Prepare a public speaking event that provides a forum for
students to inspire others to support sustainable production methods
Distribute a survey about food habits to learn about and limit the amount of food waste that ends
up in a landfill
An interpretive dance or dramatic piece that demonstrates the inequity of food
distribution
Goal 15: LIFE ON LANDSustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Project Two: Goal 15: LIFE ON LANDSustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity lossForests are home to 80% of all species of animals, plants and insects!
However, human activity has altered almost 75% of the earth’s surface,
squeezing wildlife and nature into an ever-smaller corner of the planet. Hmm...
What can we do? How might an awareness campaign shed light on soil
erosion and desertification? How can we improve our ecosystems so that local
flora and fauna thrive? What are the challenges to initiating change?
Passion Projects
Project Two: Ways to Present Findings
Research and create a persuasive presentation that
promotes a call to action, demonstrating why a
responsible and sustainable plan is needed
Dialogue with municipal, provincial and federal
environmental contacts to learn about their roles,
responsibilities, and how you can support initiatives
Look for a community area in need of biodiversity and determine a
plan to support a long term solution to reclaim nature
Perform an original song or spoken word poem to address the plight of living things
without a voice
