Our founder and owner, Tim Stemwedel, is a California native and alumnus of California State Polytech-nic University in Pomona and completed his graduate studies at Fresno State. Tim has 35 years of experience in crop production and over 20 years experience with organic fertilizers. Our sales manager, Chick Gardiner, is also a California native and is an alumnus of California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. He is a licensed Pest Control Advisor in California and is a Certified International Crop Advisor. Chick has 30 years of experience in crop production and over 15 years experience with organic fertilizers. Our Northwest Sales Manager, Jim Vernor, managed international fertilizer companies and experienced agricultural practices in a wide variety of climates and soils in both conventional and organic production. He specializes in ways to control plant stress and to overcome salinity problems, and has written a number of articles for agricultural magazines and made special presentations to fertilizer pro-ducers and conventions on these topics. California Organic Fertilizers, Inc.™ (COFI) was founded in 1990 to manufacture organic fertilizers that were easier to apply than the alternatives at that time. Previously, the only fertilizers available to organic farmers were manure, sodium nitrate, liquid fish and various powdered proteins. None, except sodium nitrate, were available in a form that was easy to apply with conventional application equipment. We created a line of granulated NPK fertilizers using proteins and minerals to fill this need. Throughout our 20 year history, COFI has met this need and has dedicated itself to the manufacture of high-quality organic products. Phyta-Grow® Pre-Plant Plus™ 7-5-7, Phyta-Grow® Veggie-Mix™ 8-5-1, and Phyta-Grow® Super “N”™ 12-0-0 are three of the four granular products that made up our initial line of fertilizers in 1990. These products are still the heavy lifters of our product line. Since then, we have developed additional dry, pelleted Phyta-Grow® fertilizers and a number of liquid Phytamin® fertilizers.
New Technology
At COFI, we constantly strive to meet the needs of organic growers by producing the safest and most efficient products possible through the use of new technology. We have even filed several patents on our new liquid products and processes.
We have invested heavily in new technology and equipment to increase our production levels and to improve the quality of our products. Our most recent investments include the installation of a Niro Mechanical Vapor Recompression Evaporator, which is used to produce 100% soluble Phytamin® products, and the installation of a new pellet mill to increase production capacity to meet the growing needs of our customers. We have also incorporated a Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) program into our production processes to ensure that our products are free of pathogens. A third-party consultant assisted us with the program preparation and employee training. As part of the HACCP program, we test all finished products on a regular schedule to reconfirm the effectiveness of our safeguards.
Thank You
Our dedication and commitment to produce dependable, high-quality, organic fertilizers, is as deep as our roots in organic agriculture. We extend our gratitude to all of our customers for giving us the opportunity to continue to supply them with our existing products, as well as provide new ones. We also wish to extend an invitation to all of our customers to visit our facility. You can see, first-hand, that our products are produced using only inputs that are acceptable for organic agriculture and are free of manure and human pathogens.
Our Roots
5
Natural fertilizers fit into two distinct categories: natural organic compounds and mined minerals. The natural organic products include compost, peat, manure, seaweed, and high protein feed products: blood, bone, meat, poultry and fish meals. Cottonseed and soybean meals are also in this category. The mined materials include sulfate of potash, various forms of phosphate rock, rock dusts, gypsum, sodium nitrate and other minerals. The main difference between natural fertilizers and chemical fertilizers is that natural fertilizers are insoluble and release slowly in the soil through a process called "mineralization." This process feeds the soil, which then feeds the plant. Chemical fertilizers are usually various salts of nitrate, ammonia or phosphate, which are soluble and designed to feed the plant directly. Mineralization is the microbial (bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi) transformation of an element from organic to its inorganic form; for example, the conversion of protein Nitrogen inherent in natural products to an inorganic form of ammonium or nitrate. Microbial breakdown of the protein results in the slow release of Nitrogen which means more uptake by the plant and less being lost to leaching. Soluble chemical fertilizers are easily applied to plants or soil, but there are problems with leaching, increasing salt levels, soil structure and pH. Chemical fertilizers often restrict the available levels of many of the essential elements for optimum plant growth. Chemical fertilizers are generally processed as salts which adversely affect the soil microbes that are the beneficial mineralizers in our soils. NITROGEN
Our field research indicates that natural Nitrogen derived from protein sources is three to five times more efficient for plant utilization per unit than chemical soluble Nitrogen and leads to less groundwater contamination. PHOSPHATE
Natural mineral phosphate differs from chemical phosphate fertilizers in that it is very stable. The available phosphate level in the raw rock is about ten percent of the total. The balance of the phosphate will become available over time due to the action of organic acids released by soil organisms and plant roots. Phosphate will also become available by soil chemical reaction if the soil has a pH below 6.0. Chemical phosphates are very unstable. As a result, they tie up existing soluble elements in the soil to achieve stability. Chemical phosphates affect soluble calcium, zinc, iron, copper and other positive ions. Natural bone meal phosphate is also low in available phosphate since it is in the form of tri-calcium phosphate. Phosphate from bone meal becomes available through microbial breakdown. SUMMARY
Natural fertilizers that feed the soil microbes, which in turn provide nutrients to the plant, have been used for centuries to enhance plant growth. They are a valuable companion to chemical fertilizers for obtaining maximum economic yields and provide: increased soil structure, better fertility balance regimes and less potential for environmental groundwater contamination due to undesirable leaching.

Fact Sheet

California Organic Fertilizers’ BioSecure™ As more and more consumers demand safe and pathogen-free food products and the government imposes strict regu-lations to meet that demand, major changes are taking place in the way food is grown, harvested, processed and pack-aged. As the food industry focuses on methods to reduce or eliminate the risk of food tainted by pathogens, such as E. coli and salmonella, every aspect of the production process is scrutinized. Organic fertilizer inputs, which are applied to many food sources directly and indirectly, reside at the very beginning of that production process and are now subject to these regulations. Some of the new requirements include HACCP Pro-grams (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points), laboratory testing, lot number tracking, etc. In general, organic fertilizers are made from natural materials such as manure, food waste, organic industrial waste, rendered proteins, and other biologically active materials which may harbor pathogens. Most organic fertilizer prod-ucts will also serve as a growth substrate for pathogenic microbes. As such, organic fertilizer products carry a signifi-cant risk of pathogen contamination.
Fertilizers are an integral part of soil preparation; therefore, they have a more significant impact on the events that follow. The pyramid above illustrates this point. Not only is fertilizer important to the growth of the crop, but it also affects the risk level in regards to food safety. Organic fertilizers produced today, and used on everything from lettuce to berries, may be free of pathogens immedi-ately following manufacture, but few are capable of killing organisms that come in contact with the fertilizer during storage and at various points along the transportation pipeline. So, although these fertilizers may be pathogen-free following production, the risk of contamination is only reduced; it’s not eliminated.
COFI is proud to offer BioSecure™, a new class of organic fertilizer that is toxic to pathogens. This means that the fertil-izer is free of pathogens when made and it will never serve as a carrier or growth medium for pathogens. Pathogens coming into contact with BioSecure™ fertilizers simply die. With California Organic Fertilizers’ BioSecure™ fertilizers, growers are now able to minimize their food safety risk by completely eliminating any risk associated with the application of organic fertilizers.

Calculations Turkey Litter Example LGM Example
Plant Available Nitrogen (PAN)
Plant Available Nitrogen (PAN) is the quantity of Nitrogen made available during the growing
season after fertilizing materials are applied. A certain amount of the Nitrogen is immobilized,
and the remaining Nitrogen is available to the plant. Some fertilizing options are better than
others in terms of PAN. The worksheet below illustrates how to calculate PAN when determin-
ing which material/fertilizer is more effective in terms of available Nitrogen as well as price.
In this example, we see that although Leafy Green Mix costs more per ton
than turkey litter, Leafy Green Mix actually costs less per pound when we de-
termine how much Nitrogen is available from the two products. The Leafy
Green Mix is also significantly more efficient than the turkey litter regardless
of the cost. When choosing a fertilizing material based on its Nitrogen con-
tent, the rule of thumb is to choose the material with the lower C:N Ratio.

FOLIAR SPRAY RECOMMENDATIONS
Mix well before use. GRAPES:
Apply 1 pint per acre in enough water to give thorough coverage. Start applications prior to spring growth. Continue applications at 7 to 10 day intervals. Use lower rates early in season.
COTTON & SOYBEANS: Apply 1pint per acre in enough water to give thorough coverage. Start applications at
the time of normal insect control. Repeat treatment at 7 to 10 day intervals. CORN, PASTURE AND GRAIN CROPS:
Apply 1 pint per acre in at least 20 gallons of water. Applications should be made early in the growing season. Additional treatments may be made if necessary.
ORCHARDS: Apply 1 to 2 pints per acre in enough water to give thorough coverage. Begin applications early in the growing season. Apply 1 pint per acre as a dormant spray.
VEGETABLES: Apply 1 pint per acre in a minimum of 5 gallons water per acre. Begin early in season
at lower rates. Make additional applications as needed. MELONS & CUCURBITS:
Apply 1 pint of PHYTAMIN® LIQUID HUMIC ACID per acre per application. SUGAR BEETS:
Apply 1 pint per acre in enough water to provide thorough coverage. Begin early in season and make additional applications if necessary.
PHYTAMIN® LIQUID HUMIC ACID may be applied by ground or air equipment or through sprinkler irrigation systems. PHYTAMIN® LIQUID HUMIC ACID is compatible with most insecticides and other
nutrient sprays. Always conduct a compatibilty test if in doubt. When foliar spraying PHYTAMIN® LIQUID HUMIC ACID through conventional ground spray equipment, use a minimum of 20 gallons water per acre.
When spraying PHYTAMIN® LIQUID HUMIC ACID through low volume spray equipment, 5 gallons of water per acre is usually sufficient. For best results, spray in late evening, night or early morning hours. Mid-day sprays are least effective and injury
to plant may occur at temperatures over 90 degrees F.
SOIL APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS PHYTAMIN® LIQUID HUMIC ACID may be applied with liquid fertilizers or water. Use
1 to 2 gallons per acre. Do not mix with Phosphoric Acid, Calcium Nitrate, or liquid Zinc Sulfate.
DIRECTIONS FOR MIXING BEFORE USING Shake container. It is normal for humic acid materials to have some sediment in container. Pour recommended amount into partially filled spray tank. Keep agitator
running during filling and spraying operations. Rinse all containers and add to spray tank. Do not reuse containers for any purpose.
PHYTAMIN® LIQUID HUMIC ACID is recommended on the following crops: alfalfa, almonds, apples, avocados, barley, all beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower,
celery, citrus, corn, grapes, lettuce, melons, milo, nectarines, peaches, peanuts, pears, pecans, peppers, potatoes, rice, sorghum, soybeans, strawberries, sugar beets, sugar cane, sweet corn, tomatoes, turnips, walnuts, watermelons, wheat, and most other
crops.
