CATALYST1. Set up yourCornell notes by:
a) Putting the heading (metrics) at the top left
b) Gluing the notes on the right side.
2. Answer the catalyst questions on your notes
3. Turn in your SCIENTIST picture.
OBJECTIVES
SWBAT:-explain why we need the metric system- distinguish between metric units- understand why we need different sized units
ENGLISH SYSTEMYou are familiar with inches, feet, miles, pounds, quarts, and so on.This is not an easy system!
How many inches in 1 foot?12 inches
How many feet in a yard?3 feet
How many yards in a mile?1760 yards
METRIC SYSTEM
Metric system is decimalized, meaning it has a base of 10This means that each unit is 10 times bigger or smaller than the next.
This makes it much easier!
WHY DO WE USE THE METRIC SYSTEM?
We use the metric system because we can easily manipulate metric units into more useful sizes and measures. We start with a base unit and manipulate it to make smaller or bigger
METRIC SYSTEM• Another goal of the metric system is to have a single unit for any physical quantity across the world.
• This allows scientists to communicate in a standard mathematical language regardless of where they come from!
Metric System – Base Units
Base quantityUnit
Name Symbol
Length meter mMass gram gTime second s
Liquid Volume liter l
Pay attention to the symbols!
BASE UNITSMeter length
Length of a tableHeight of a person
Gram massMass of a pencilMass of a calculator
BASE UNITSSeconds time
Time for a pencil to fall to the ground
Liters liquid volumeAmount of liquid in a monster
canAmount of water in a cup
METRIC PREFIXESIn the English system, there are
inches, feet, yards, and miles to measure length
In the metric system, we add prefixes to our base units to create larger and smaller unitsPrefix- placed at the beginning
METRIC PREFIXES

Mnemonic Device – will help us remember the metric prefixes
PREFIXES + BASE UNITS
To create smaller or larger units we combine the prefixes with the base unitsKilo (k) + meter (m) = kilometer (km)Kilo (k) + gram (g) = kilogram (kg)

HOW BIG ARE THE PREFIXED UNITS?
Kilometers - distances between citiesMeters – height of peopleMillimeters – length of ants.
Kilograms – mass of peopleGrams – mass of drops of waterMilligrams – mass of medicinal tablets
