• 4.6. Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations.

What you will need to begin this experiment:

– Oobleck (already prepared for you)– pie pans (to put Oobleck in)– newspaper (to cover desks)– small objects (paper clips, pennies,

confetti, marbles, toothpicks, string)– Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr.

Seuss

Introduction:• LIQUIDS: Assumes the shape of

the container which it occupies, not easily compressible and flows easily.

• SOLIDS: Has a fixed volume and shape, not easily compressible and does not flow easily.

Continued…• It is possible for substances to have

both properties of a solid and a liquid.• We will take a marble, penny, confetti,

toothpicks, string and paper clip and sink it in the Oobleck. Observe what happens for each one and write it down.

• Touch and explore the consistency of the Oobleck.

When finished:• Share your group findings with the

class.• In your science journals, write

about your experiences with the Oobleck.

Conclusion• Oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid.

Non-Newtonian is a substance that exhibits characteristics of both solids and liquids.
