DfE ran a consultation in Jan 2021, reviewing which

Level 3 vocational qualifications should be funded in the

long term future, alongside A Levels and T Levels.

What are T Levels? • New post 16 technical study programmes that will

sit alongside apprenticeships and A levels. Aim to streamline technical education.

• Developed in partnership with government, business and education, with contracts managed by IfATE.

• Outline Content based on apprenticeship standards is created by T Level panels to set out the knowledge and skills required.

• AOs use the Outline Content and Ofqual conditions to design TQ specification and assessment.

• Focus on developing skills within 15 industry routes. 11 of which will have a T Level, with a total of 25 Technical Qualifications.

• First three pathways commence September 2020, with full roll-out of all 11 TQs expected September 2023.

How do T Levels work?

Construction: assessment approachCore knowledge and skills 600GLH [50% of the total Technical Qualification]

Knowledge module 1: Core Paper 1

Science and Building Technology

• Externally assessed written

examination

• 2-hour 30 minute

• 33.33% of the Core

• 100 marks

• Graded A* - E

The examination will consist of two

sections Section A and Section B and will

include short, medium and extended open-

response questions as well as drawing and Maths Questions.

Knowledge module 2: Core Paper 2

• Externally assessed written examination

• 2-hour 30 minute

• 33.33% of the Core

• 100 marks

• Graded A* - E

The examination will consist of two sections

Section A and Section B and will include short,

medium and extended open-response questions as drawing and identification questions.

Employer Set Project

• Externally assessed project

• 15 hour 30 (assessed in a fixed 4-

week window)

• 33.33% of the Core

• 100 marks

• Graded A* - E

Students will undertake a project in

response to a realistic contextualised challenge.

Occupational Specialism 600GLH [50% of the total Technical Qualification]

The students will take one Occupational Specialism along with the Core:

• Surveying and Design for Construction and the Built Environment –

External assessment, 30 hours (a fixed window)

• Civil Engineering - External assessment, 25 hours (fixed window)

• Building Services Design - External assessment, 20 hours 40 minutes

(fixed window)

• Hazardous Materials Analysis and Surveying - External assessment,

15 hours 30 minutes (fixed window)

For each specialism the externally assessed Project consists of:

• 100% of the Occupational Specialism component

• 180 marks

• Graded P, M and D

• Students will respond to a vocational scenario within the

specialism undertaken.

Digital Analysis, Legislation and Emerging Issues

• Externally assessed written

examination

• 2-hour 30 minute

open-response questions as well as drawing and developing code questions.

Knowledge module 2: Core Paper 2

The Business Environment

• Externally assessed written

examination

• 2-hour 30 minute

• 33.33% of the Core

• 100 marks

• Graded A* - E

The examination will consist of two

sections Section A and Section B and will

include short, medium and extended open-

response questions as well as labelling questions.

Employer Set Project

• Externally assessed project

• 14 hour30 minute (assessed in a fixed

3-week window)

• 33.33% of the Core

• 100 marks

• Graded A* - E

Students will undertake a project in

response to a realistic contextual challenge.

Occupational Specialism 600GLH [50% of the total Technical Qualification]

Externally assessed project

• 67 hours (assessed in a fixed 11-week window)

• 100% of the Occupational Specialism component

• 145 marks

• Graded P, M and D• Students will respond to a vocational scenario to design and develop a software based solution.
