In support of
the right to
choose books
freely for our-
selves, ALA
and Conn Li-
brary spon-
sored Banned
Books Week
(September 29
- October 4,
2008), an an-
nual celebra-
tion of our right
to access
books without
censorship. It
commemorates
the most basic
freedom in a democratic
society—the freedom to read
freely—and encourages us
not to take this freedom for
granted.
Celebrate with us all year
long! Check out a banned or
challenged book !
As children start a new
school year, teachers send
out their reading lists and
parents begin to gather
books. In some cases, clas-
sics like "The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn" and "To
Kill a Mocking Bird" may not
be included in curriculum or
available in the school li-
brary due to chal-
lenges made by
parents or admin-
istrators.
In 2007, the
American Library
Association's
(ALA) Office for
Intellectual Free-
dom (OIF) re-
corded 420 book
challenges re-
questing a book
be removed from
library shelves or
school curricu-
lum. It is thanks to
the commitment of librarians,
teachers, parents, and stu-
dents that most challenges
are unsuccessful and books
like "I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings," "Slaughterhouse
Five," the Harry Potter series
and Richardson and Parnell’s
“And Tango Makes Three,”
which topped OIF's most
challenged list in
2007, remain
available.
Challenges are not
simply an expres-
sion of a point of
view; they restrict
the access of others.
Even of a challenge
is well intentioned,
the outcome is det-
rimental. Censor-
ship denies our
freedom as indi-
viduals to choose
and think for our-
selves.

Database Spotlight: Oregon PDF in Health & Performance
What is it?
OregonPDF in Health & Performance, a non-profit founda-
tion, cooperates with colleges and universities throughout
the world to make available graduate dissertations and
theses in areas related to health and performance.
The intellectual focus of the collection is physical activity.
Academic areas of interest include biochemistry, biome-
chanics, dance, exercise physiology, history or philosophy
of physical education, kinesiology, motor control, obesity,
recreation, sports marketing, sports medicine, sports
pedagogy, sports psychology, and tests and measure-
ments.
The collection has developed continuously since 1948.
There are over 10,000 dissertations and theses, with over
200 added each year.
What does it have to do with the P.E.
Microfiche?
Previously, the graduate dissertations and theses in areas
related to health and performance were available only in
microfiche. OregonPDF in Health & Performance provides
these same materials and all future materials in an online
format.
You can request that any document not currently in full-
text be converted to PDF form. Just click on the link pro-
vided and fill out the contact information. Once the con-
version is complete, you will be emailed. You will then be
able to re-search for the document and view it in PDF
form. OregonPDF in Health & Performance indicates that
they plan to have a 24 hour turn-around for such conver-
sions.

Pura Belpré Medal Award Books Conn Library’s collec-
tions now hold Pura
Belpré Medal award
winning books.
The Pura Belpré Award,
established in 1996, is
presented to a Latino/
Latina writer and illus-
trator whose work best
portrays, affirms, and
celebrates the Latino
cultural experience in an
outstanding work of
literature for children
and youth. It is co-sponsored
by the Association for Library
Service to Children (ALSC), a
division of the American Li-
brary Association (ALA), and
the National Association to
Promote Library and Informa-
tion Services to Latinos and
the Spanish-Speaking
(REFORMA), an ALA affiliate.
The award is named after Pura
Belpré, the first Latina librar-
ian at the New York Public
Library. As a children's librar-
ian, storyteller, and author, she
enriched the lives of Puerto
Rican children in the U.S.A.
through her pioneering work
of preserving and disseminating
Puerto Rican folklore.
It has been given every other
year since 1996. Beginning with
the 2009 award, it will be given
annually. — ALSC WEBSITE

At one time it was difficult to find a children’s book
in a foreign language because those books were
shelved within the general children’s collection.
However, with the new children’s foreign language
section in the Instructional Technology Center
(ITC), those worries are over. These books, who
proudly bear their new yellow banding, are now
shelved by language (ie Spanish, French, German),
making it easy to find the material you need.
