Let’s review…….There are four levels of organization:

1. Cells

2. Tissues

3. Organs

4. Organ systems

FYI……..

The human body is composed of 210 different cell types!

The four primary tissues types:1.Epithelial2.Connective3.Muscle4.Nerve

Examples of organs:Brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, stomach,

pancreas, liver, spleen, etc. etc.

Organ systems are groups of organs that cooperate to perform the major activities of the body. There are 11 principal organ systems.

Organization of Body

What have you learned?

Do you recognize the cell?

Sickle cell

Where did these cells come from?

Where could you find these cells?

In which organ system can you find these cells?

Are these smooth or skeletalmuscle cells? How can you tell?

What are these “unpopular” cells?

Who you calling

fat?

“Who” do these cells belong to?

What is this organ?

What does this organ do for you?

What organ system does this organ belong to?

You sure you want

that cigarette?

There are 11 principal organ systems.1. Cardiovascular system (heart)2. Respiratory system (lungs)3. Excretory (Urinary) system (kidneys)4. Skeletal system (bones)5. Muscular system (muscles)6. Endocrine system (hormones)7. Immune system (fights disease)8. Integumentary system (skin)9. Nervous system (brain)10.Reproductive system (ovaries, testes)11.Digestive system (stomach)

16

Overview of Organ Systems

Communication and integration

-The nervous and endocrine systems detect external stimuli and coordinate the body’s responses

Support and movement

-The musculo-skeletal system consists of two interrelated organ systems

17

Overview of Organ SystemsRegulation and maintenance

-Four organ systems regulate and maintain the body’s chemistry

-Digestive, circulatory, respiratory and urinary systems

Defense-The body defends itself with two organ systems: integumentary and immune systems

18

Overview of Organ Systems

Reproduction, development & evolution

-The reproductive system insures the survival of a species.

-In females, the system also nurtures the developing embryo and fetus
