ASPCA Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic Program Goals

1. To end the euthanasia of adoptable animals in NYC’s five boroughs

2. To improve the health & quality of life of needy animals in inner-city communities

Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic History

• 1997– one converted RV (the “Care-a-Van”)– three team members, 15 surgeries per day max– Long Island locations

• 2001– first custom-built Isuzu box truck mobile clinic (later called “M1”)– 25 surgeries per day max

• Today– 2002 - M2 – 2007 - M3– 2008 - M4– Now: 30 + team members, up to 100 surgeries per day

• 2009– M5 and Bergh Spay Days for rescue cats

• NYC homeless pets– spay/neuter, vaccines– microchipping– tests and medications

The Mobile Clinic’s Targeted Animals• Cats and dogs belonging to NYC residents who

receive public assistance– Medicaid, Medicare, disability, SSI, food stamps, TANF; rent receipt

from public housing, etc. on first come, first served basis

– Reservations for large mixed-breed dogs

• Homeless adoptable cats and dogs– city shelters, private shelters, rescue groups,

individual rescuers, etc., by appointment.

• NYC feral cat colonies– TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) for trained trappers by app’t.

Public Locations: Where We Go and Why

NYC Locations:• 30 in Brooklyn• 23 in the Bronx• 19 in Queens• 12 in Manhattan• 6 on Staten Island

Location criteria:• 40% poverty level or more according to US Census data• Highest city shelter intake rates by zip code• Outreach partnerships: i.e., Petland Discounts, NYCHA, etc.

The statistics1. For every 100 dogs we do on the clinic, AC&C will

see 72 fewer next year! And for every 100 cats we do, AC&C will see 57 fewer. This program can currently do those 200 in a day and a half.

2. In NYC, we should be doing about 40,000 Medicaid s/n surgeries each year to impact shelter intake rates. This does not include s/n for rescue groups or shelters! This program is currently doing approximately 11,000.
