District 1 D Newsletter April 2019 Volume 5 Issue 10
From Your Governor
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE!
Going a month without a newsletter has
caused some challenges but together we
overcame and it is fantastic to know PCC
Paul Lindstrom is recovering and able to
take his Editor duties back over again!
Flooding has hit several communities in our District and
it continues to strike others. Thank you to your District Cabinet
that recently approved $10,000 to be donated from our Disas-
ter Relief Fund to flood victims. We hope to be applying for a
$20,000 LCIF grant to help with rebuilding. Right now, we are
working with agencies to get the facts and numbers we need to
apply which is taking longer because there are some victims
who are still not able to get into their homes yet to have them
assessed. It’s great to know that where there is a need, there is
a Lion!
Thank you to all who attended the 1-D Convention! It
was a huge success with over 160 Lions attending at the beauti-
ful Masonic Temple in Freeport! Congratulations to DGE Rich-
ard Delp, 1st VDGE Ron Fruit, 2nd VDGE Tami Verstraete, and LIF
Trustee Steve Boettger on their appointments for the 2019-20
Lions year. We had fantastic speakers and entertainment and

hope all had a great time. A special thank you to ID Mark Lyon and his wife, Lion Lyn for
attending, speaking and entertaining us with music.
Dial It Up! is coming along well as Clubs are responding by adding new Lions since this
challenge has been introduced and reducing their number of dropped Lions. This challenge
is to end the Lions’ year with a plus one in membership. As of today, we are still down a net
-32 in our District. I encourage every Club to make a push for membership in the next 60
days so that we can end our year in the positive numbers. This means asking caring people
to join our organization as well as keeping your current members informed and active so that
they want to remain a Lion. Lions, let’s ROAR (Reach Out And Respond)!
As we begin to think about the next Lions’ year, Secretaries, please remember to com-
plete the 2019-20 Officer Designations (formerly PU-101) in My LCI. The deadline to com-
plete this is May 15. Please try to fill all of the positions listed as there are some new ones.
The Club Administrator position is one that Clubs and their Secretaries may find extremely
helpful. This position has all of the same accesses in My LCI as a Club President or Secretary.
My LCI is where the monthly online reporting of membership and activities is done. Duties
can be split so that your Club Secretary can handle things such as minutes and your Club Ad-
ministrator can handle all of the monthly reporting. There is also a Club LCIF Coordinator,
Club Marketing & Communications Chairperson, Club Service Chairperson and Club Mem-
bership Chairperson. Please either go to https://www.lionsclubs.org/en/resources-for-
members/resource-center and type in the position to get more information. Officer Training
is being planned for late June. This training is for all officers to attend. Please watch for
more information to come out shortly with the details.
If your Club is needing handouts or facts on Diabetes,
you can now find more resources on our District web page at
http://www.e-district.org/sites/district 1d under the Docu-
ments tab.
Lions – thank you for all that you do! Remember to sub-
mit items to the newsletter and your local papers so you keep
your Lions Club visible to your community!
Keep ROAR ing,

First Vice District Governor Richard Delp
Even though it doesn’t feel like it today as I write this, Spring is
indeed here! District Convention is behind us now. I hope that every-
one had a wonderful time and got plenty to eat. A big thank you to all
who attended and to all the Lions who helped put the convention
together.
As we move into the last few months of this Lions’ year I would
like to take a minute to thank all the clubs in the Southwest Zone for
making me feel at home when I visited their clubs. Also thanks for the great attendance at
all the Zone Meetings, when we were able to have them this winter.
By next newsletter I should have a complete list of important upcoming dates, but for
now, don’t forget that now is the time to be getting your PU 101 forms in and verify that all
the information is correct. This will help in making the 2019/2020 District Directory as accu-
rate as possible.
The District Convention for next year will be March 6th and 7th 2020.

Our International Guest
Mark S. Lyon
International Director
Mark S. Lyon, from Brookfield, Connecticut, USA, was elected to serve as International
Director of Lions Clubs International at the association’s 101st International Convention,
held in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, June 29 through July 3, 2018.
Director Lyon is the recipient of numerous awards including an International President’s
Award and an International President’ Leadership Award. He has also been recognized as a
Connecticut Knight of the Blind and a Connecticut Ambassador of Sight in addition to receiv-
ing four International President’s Certificate of Appreciation, alongside a number of project
and service related certificates.
Director Lyon is a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellow. His wife Carolyn “Lyn” Lyon is also
a longtime Lion and Melvin Jones Fellow.
The Pecatonica Lions along with members of the community
have recycled their Christmas lights the last couple of months. We were able to collect 188 pounds of lights for recycling and prevent them from going into our landfills. We also were recent-ly able to recycle 170 pairs of eyeglasses, 45 ink cartridges and 13 pounds of keys. We also have been asking for plastic bags to be dropped off for recycling and these are being used to make park benches. So far we have received enough of these, 500 pounds, to provide one bench. We are well on our way to secur-ing our second bench.

AMBOY LIONS
At the March meeting of the Amboy Lions Club, Dr. Kelly Klein of
the KSB Eye Care Clinic of Dixon presented an outstanding lecture on
eye diseases and the effects of medications on eye health. The Lion
members wish to thank Dr. Klein for giving this very interesting
presentation.
Amboy Lion President Roger Wittenauer, Lion Secretary Dennis
Marsili, and Lion Jim Travi attended the District 1-D Convention in
Freeport on March 9. The conference’s main focus was diabetes edu-
cation. The Amboy Club plans to bring more awareness of this medi-
cal issue to the community through presentations that will be given at future club meetings. The public will
be invited to sit in on these presentations.
In other upcoming events, the Amboy Lions and Leo Club
members will prepare and serve breakfast to the Mabley Cen-
ter residents and their families on Sunday, April 14. The Club
is also busy organizing the annual Cliff Walter Easter Egg Hunt.
This will be held on April 20, at 2:00 p.m. at the Amboy City
Park. The festivities will begin at 1:30 with the opportunity to
take pictures with the Easter Bunny and the egg hunt for the
various age groups will begin at 2:00. In case of inclement
weather, it will be held on April 21. This is one of the many
community events that the Club organizes and sponsors each
year. Amboy Food and Liquor will donate the eggs again this year.
In other news, the Amboy Lions Club donated money to sponsor a possible candidate to the Lions Camp
for the Visually and Hearing Impaired.
They also recently donated to the Sublette Toy Show, and the AYSO Soc-
cer Club.
The Amboy Lions welcome new members, Perry Braida, Mark Gross-
man and Jeff Hanson. Lions 1-D District Governor Barbara Stewart will
be at the Club’s meeting on April 8 for the induction/recognition cere-
mony of the new members. Lion Dave Kemp was recently awarded the
Diamond Centennial pin at the March 11 meeting. Lion Kemp received
this award for his work and dedication toward growing our Club and es-
tablishing a Leo Club at AHS. Congratulations, Lion Kemp.

Oregon Lions
Steve Rypkema, who has been Director of the Ogle County Solid Waste
Management Department for the past 29 years, spoke to the Oregon Lions at
their regular meeting on February 28th.
He explained the reasons behind the recent decision to stop the drop-off recycling
program in May of this year. The service that the county had provided for many
years had never been profitable, but recently costs to provide the service had
increased by 135% and it has become too expensive to maintain. China is now
refusing to process recyclables and there are not enough sorting facilities locally
to cope with the waste material.
Steve stated that many other programs will continue. Those include: the
monthly collection of electronics, the collection of motor oil and antifreeze, school
programs such as the 3rd Graders Outdoor Stewardship Days, the Christmas light
recycling program, the Rock River Sweep, and the Million Trees program.
Oregon Lions wants to thank Steve for all of his efforts in helping to help
maintain the integrity of
our environment here in
Ogle County.

Free Eye Examinations for Infants 6 Months to 1 Year
Vision problems detected at a very early age can be more easily corrected. An “Infant See”
program supported by the American Optometric Association is available for infants age 6
months to 1 year. Optometrists participating in this program provide free comprehensive
eye and vision assessments regardless of income or insurance coverage. Infant See was
developed in 2005 by the American Optometric Association and Johnson & Johnson Vision
as a public health program to ensure eye and vision care be a part of infant wellness care
and thus improving a child’s quality of life.
In checking the availability of participating optometrists in our area, I noted there were
offices located in Freeport, Rockford, Dixon, and Sycamore. I inquired with one office and
they reported they do see infants in the noted age group from time to time. For additional
information about the Infant See program, check out their website at http://
www.infantsee.org.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Lion Friends, I can’t thank you enough for the cards, calls, prayers and well wishes during my re-
cent unfortunate experience. Most of you know I was just getting past my broken leg from September 22
when I had a serious fall on February 28 that put me in the hospital for a couple of days. I fell backwards
from about the fourth step up to our deck on the back of the house. Air borne for that fall I landed on my
“butt” continued to my left shoulder and ultimately the back of my head. That was the first time I truly
saw “stars” when your head is bumped. Once I got into the house I could not remember what I was even
doing outside! After stitches, x-rays and a CT Scan I had nothing broke but did have a sub-duro hematoma
at the front of my brain. My brain had rebounded from hitting the back of my head and hit the front of
my skull causing the bleed. Now I know how those football players must feel!
The accident and resulting injuries is why you did not receive a March Newsletter. If you’ve never
had a brain injury like I had, you are not to be working on a computer, doing much reading or watching of
television. Fortunately the first few days the pain killers helped with that part. I was dark purple from my
waist to the back of my knees. It is just now about gone. After some time my shoulder was not getting
much better and saw a Dr. for that and had x-rays again. Ended up they thought just a “jammed” shoulder
and with time it would get better. It did.
Then one night I saw these little specs moving in front of me. That took me to see a Ophthalmolo-
gist to get a dilated eye exam. I didn’t have any current bleeding but did have some “floaters” in there
that I didn’t have before. I guess I just broke some rust loose that was now floating around.
I regretted I could not attend the District Convention but I haven’t went anywhere since February
28 but to the Doctors office. I am much better now as the head doesn’t spin when I get up!
I just had my latest CT Scan done and my Neuro Surgeon appointment this week and I have been
released to drive in Leaf River ONLY. Do you know how long it takes to drive every street in Leaf River?
About 10 minutes! But I can at least drive. I can resume most of my computer work and watch television
more. The rest of the news was not so good, as the area where I had the sub dura hematoma has actually
gotten larger and shrinking like hoped. So, another CT Scan in a short month and another Dr. appoint-
ment. I have to be really careful in what I do because I’m a high risk for a stroke during all of this. If the
area is not improved at the next visit we may have to make another decision. They may have to do sur-
gery and go in to get the area cleared. Let’s just keep hoping and praying the Mother Nature does her job
and it gets absorbed naturally.
Your cards and calls really helped the time go by and brought smiles to me. It’s great to know our
Lion Pride is there when it really counts. This is twice now someone up above has helped me get through
a serious accident. Remember to keep him in your thanks as well. Thanks again for all the cards, calls,
prayers—THEY DO REALLY WORK!

Membership
THANK YOU! District 1-D Lions Clubs are working on their membership! We are currently at
a net loss of 32 Lions in the District. This is doing much better than previous months but we
need to work on this in the last quarter of our Lions’ year. There are several Clubs who have
held or will be holding a membership drive in the near future. Keep up the great work! This
may be all it takes to move us into positive territory with our membership!
A challenge was issued to us a few months ago to DIAL IT UP! The goal of every Club is to
end this Lions’ year with a plus one in membership and many Clubs are on their way to
meeting this challenge. Lions Clubs that have moved into positive membership growth for
the year are: Orangeville, Polo, Prophetstown, Roscoe, Stillman Valley, Winnebago, Amboy,
Apple River, Belvidere, Capron, Durand, East Dubuque, Freeport, Kirkland, Lena, Loves Park,
Morrison and Mount Carroll. Lions Clubs that only need to add ONE NEW MEMBER to show
positive membership growth are: Albany, Ashton, Chadwick, Galena, Genoa, German Valley,
Leaf River, Marengo, Mount Morris, Paw Paw, Rochelle, Rockford Evening, Shannon, Stock-
ton, and Warren. Keep up the great work in working towards meeting this challenge!
Please remember to keep your Lions active in your Club! One of the number one reasons Li-
ons leave our organization is not being kept active. As you plan the remainder of your events
for the year, please look at a Club roster and invite those you haven’t seen for a while to join
in!
Service District 1-D have reported 24,145 hours of Lions service that we have provided to our com-
munities year-to-date! Awesome job Lions!
Thank you to all who struggled with reporting in March due to the unified system being im-
plemented by LCI. If you were not able to report your service, please do so in March. Dis-
trict Governor Barb will not hold any Club accountable for not filing as it pertains to Club or
President/Secretary Awards.

7th Annual Dining in the Dark Sheds Light
On Thursday, March 14, 151 guests temporarily lost their sight and attempted to enjoy a 4-course meal while blindfolded as part of CSH’s 7th annual Dining in the Dark at the Radisson Hotel in Rockford. The evening, designed to shed light on obstacles those with no or low vision face, included cocktails, a mystery wine pull, information about CSH, and dinner. In addition, guests had the opportunity to help cover the cost of a new Woods Equipment Co.
FZ22-2 Zero Turn Mower. The mower was contributed by Woods at cost and will allow CSH to save $9,000 a year in operating costs! Thank you to our guests, sponsors and volunteers who helped raise over $34,000 in support of CSH’s programs and services. Special thanks to Woods, Midland Wealth Management, Area Erectors, Byron Lions Club, Rosecrance, Flanders Insurance Agency, Auto Owners Insurance, Lions of Illinois Foundation, Rockton Lions Club, Rockford Noon Lions Club, Northwest Bank, Paul Larson Concrete, Kirkland Lions Club, Event Floral, Rich and Hillary Hacker, and Crimson Ridge for their generous sponsorship of the event!

Warmer temperatures and longer days mean the time has come for summer sun and fun with festivals, fairs, pancake breakfasts, cookouts and camaraderie! If your club needs volunteers for your upcoming events, please let us know! The CSH staff is willing to help!
