Thefirstoneis theKnudsonFarmwheremyparentswerelivingwhenIwasborn.ItisonThomasRoad,offofSaukCountyK,westofReedsburg,Wisconsin (TheButterCapital). My familymoved toMadisonwhenIwasaroundthreeyearsoldandmygrandparentssolditshortlyaftersomymemoriesofthatfarmconsistofshortsnapshotsofevents.IhavespokentomyMomandDadaboutsomeofthesesnapshotsandtheyhavebeenabletofillinsomeoftheblankareasastowhatwasoccurringatthetimesoIhavesomecontexttothem.Withsomechangesthisfarmstillstandsandisrecognizable. TheSobekFarmwasonWisconsinStateHighway27betweenSenecaandEastman,Wisconsin.ThisfarmistheformerCrawfordCountyPoorFarmmygrandfatherpurchasedfromthecounty.IhavemanymemoriesofthisplaceasitwasnotsolduntilafterIwasordainedandlivinginPittsville,Wisconsin.Itwastheplacewehuntedsquirrels,rabbits,anddeer.Myfirstexperiencedrivingamotorizedvehiclewassittingonmygrandfather’slapsteeringaMassey-Fergusontractor.Ihelpedcleanthebarninthedaysbeforemotorizedbarncleaners.Icarried5gallonpailsofmilktoputintothecansinthemilkhouse,althoughIcouldnotliftithighenoughtoputitintothestrainerontopofthecan.Wesleddeddownthehillbehindthehogbarninthewinter.Mygrandfatherpassedawayin1981atthisfarm.Thereisnothingleftofthefarmexceptaconcreteblockgaragewhichcannotbeviewedfromthehighway.AsIunderstandit,thehogbarnwentdowninonestorm,thebigbarninanother.Thehousewasinpoorshapeandwithalittleneglectprobablycavedinonitself.Everythingelseisgone.Allthatisleftisthememories. Someonebuiltashedwherethebigbarnusedtobe,anditlooksliketheyraisebeeforuseitforheifers.Thereisatrailerhouseonthatpartofthepartofthefarm.Downwherethelowerorhogbarnusedtobe,someoneelsebuiltahouseoverlookingthevalley. AlthoughfarmingwasapartofmyupbringingIdoubtanyonewouldconsidermeafarmertoday.Ididdrivetrucksforharvestingsugarbeets,barley,andsoybeanswhileinNorthDakota.IhelpedharvestcranberriesinPittsville.IthrewstrawbalesinAlturaforhaymowstorage.Icantellthedifferencebetweenthesmellofcows,pigs,andpoultry.Butagain,IdoubtanyonewouldsayIwasafarmer. WhatmakesyouthinkyouareaChristian?Isitbecauseyouwerebaptized?Confirmedyourfaith?Doesgrowinguparoundpeoplewhowenttochurchcount?Havinggrandparentswhowerechurchmembersmakeadifference?Ihadtheseitemswithfarming,butI’mnofarmer.AsIwasstandinginlineattheFFAconcessionstandinPittsvilleplayingbumpwithagroupofhighschoolstudents,theAgteachersaid,“Ithoughtyouweresupposedtobeapastor?”Iaskedher,“Whenwasthelasttimeyouwereinchurch?”Shesmiledandsaid,“WhenIwasconfirmed.”Iasked,“Howwouldyouknowwhatapastorissupposedtoactlike?” WhileChristmasisoftenseenasthe“big”holidayoftheyear,itisnotChristmasthatmakesusChristians.ItisEaster.WhileGodcameintotheworldthroughthebirthofJesus,itishislife,teachings,sufferings,death,andresurrectionthatbringussalvation.OurfaithteachesusGodsolovedthisworld(andyou),thatJesuswassenttobethesacrificeforourwrongs.Thiswasnotdoneathisbirth,butathisdeath.WecelebrateGod’spoweroverdeatheachEaster.Actually,eachandeverySundayisa“mini”Easter,aremembranceofwhatGoddidforusthroughChrist. Iencourageyoutoliveyourlifenotasyou“used”tobe,butwhatyouaretoday.AchildofGod,redeemedthroughthedeathofJesus,strengthenedbyGod’spowerinhisresurrection,empoweredbytheHolySpirit.ClaimyourEastergiftfromGod.
