The MESSENGER April 2018 To glorify God, we invite all to grow as faithful disciples and to share in the love, grace and ministry of Jesus Christ by serving the church, community and world. Discussions with Dave In my office I have an aerial photo of each of my grandparent’s farms. The first one is the Knudson Farm where my parents were living when I was born. It is on Thomas Road, off of Sauk County K, west of Reedsburg, Wisconsin (The Butter Capital). My family moved to Madison when I was around three years old and my grandparents sold it shortly after so my memories of that farm consist of short snapshots of events. I have spoken to my Mom and Dad about some of these snapshots and they have been able to fill in some of the blank areas as to what was occurring at the time so I have some context to them. With some changes this farm still stands and is recognizable. The Sobek Farm was on Wisconsin State Highway 27 between Seneca and Eastman, Wisconsin. This farm is the former Crawford County Poor Farm my grandfather purchased from the county. I have many memories of this place as it was not sold until after I was ordained and living in Pittsville, Wisconsin. It was the place we hunted squirrels, rabbits, and deer. My first experience driving a motorized vehicle was sitting on my grandfather’s lap steering a Massey-Ferguson tractor. I helped clean the barn in the days before motorized barn cleaners. I carried 5 gallon pails of milk to put into the cans in the milk house, although I could not lift it high enough to put it into the strainer on top of the can. We sledded down the hill behind the hog barn in the winter. My grandfather passed away in 1981 at this farm. There is nothing left of the farm except a concrete block garage which cannot be viewed from the highway. As I understand it, the hog barn went down in one storm, the big barn in another. The house was in poor shape and with a little neglect probably caved in on itself. Everything else is gone. All that is left is the memories. Someone built a shed where the big barn used to be, and it looks like they raise beef or use it for heifers. There is a trailer house on that part of the part of the farm. Down where the lower or hog barn used to be, someone else built a house overlooking the valley. Although farming was a part of my upbringing I doubt anyone would consider me a farmer today. I did drive trucks for harvesting sugar beets, barley, and soybeans while in North Dakota. I helped harvest cranberries in Pittsville. I threw straw bales in Altura for haymow storage. I can tell the difference between the smell of cows, pigs, and poultry. But again, I doubt anyone would say I was a farmer. What makes you think you are a Christian? Is it because you were baptized? Confirmed your faith? Does growing up around people who went to church count? Having grandparents who were church members make a difference? I had these items with farming, but I’m no farmer. As I was standing in line at the FFA concession stand in Pittsville playing bump with a group of high school students, the Ag teacher said, “I thought you were supposed to be a pastor?” I asked her, “When was the last time you were in church?” She smiled and said, “When I was confirmed.” I asked, “How would you know what a pastor is supposed to act like?” While Christmas is often seen as the “big” holiday of the year, it is not Christmas that makes us Christians. It is Easter. While God came into the world through the birth of Jesus, it is his life, teachings, sufferings, death, and resurrection that bring us salvation. Our faith teaches us God so loved this world (and you), that Jesus was sent to be the sacrifice for our wrongs. This was not done at his birth, but at his death. We celebrate God’s power over death each Easter. Actually, each and every Sunday is a “mini” Easter, a remembrance of what God did for us through Christ. I encourage you to live your life not as you “used” to be, but what you are today. A child of God, redeemed through the death of Jesus, strengthened by God’s power in his resurrection, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Claim your Easter gift from God. Pastor Dave Sobek Holy Communion Our next opportunity to come to Christ’s Table will be the weekend of April 14 & 15.
