Inordertocomplete24artworksbyMayofnextyear,youwillneedtocompleteTHREEprojectsoverthesummer.3DDesignrequiresTWOsummerworks.ThesemustbeNEWworkscreatedoverthesummerfromthelistbelow.Theycannotbeworksfromthepastschoolyear.

Summerworkisduethefirstdayofschool.TheseworkswillbepartofyourBREADTHportfolio.YouwillalsobeaskedtohaveTHREEpastworkstoshowmebesidesyoursummerwork,sothatisatotalofSIXpossibleworkstobringintoAPinthefallforyourBREADTH.(Fourtotalfor3D—twosummerworksandtwopastworks.)Thiswillgreatlyhelpyouwiththeworkloadnextacademicyear.

Ifyouaretakingasummerartclass,youmayuseworkfromyoursummerartclassinpartorwholeasyoursummerassignment.

PORTFOLIOTYPES:

TheAPProgramoffersthreeportfolios:Drawing,2-DDesign,and3-DDesign.Theportfoliosshareabasic,three-sectionstructure.IntheBREADTHsection,thestudentisaskedtodemonstrateaseriousgroundinginvisualprinciplesandmaterialtechniques.EachoftheportfoliosasksthestudenttoalsodemonstrateadepthofinvestigationandprocessofdiscoverythroughtheCONCENTRATIONsection.TheQUALITYsectionpermitsthestudenttoselectworksfromtheothertwosectionsthatbestexhibitasynthesisofform,technique,andcontent.

Pleasereadabriefdescriptionoftheportfoliotypesbelow.Thiswillhelpyoudecidewhichsummerassignmentstochoose.

DRAWINGPORTFOLIOLinequality,lightandshade,renderingofform,composition,surfacemanipulation,theillusionofdepthandmark-makingaredrawingissuesthatcanbeaddressedthroughavarietyofmeans,whichcouldincludepainting,printmaking,mixedmedia,etc.Abstract,observational,andinventedworksmaydemonstratedrawingcompetence.Drawingportfoliowillmostlikelynotincludephotographyorgraphicdesign.

2DDESIGNPORTFOLIOThereissomeoverlapbetweentheDrawingand2DDesignportfolios.2DDesignmayincludetheissuesstatedabove,however2DDesignismoreconcernedwiththePrinciplesofDesignforitssuccess.A2DDesignportfoliomayincludephotographyandgraphicdesign/digitalwork.A2DDesignportfoliomaybeentirelyphotographyorentirelygraphicdesignoracombination,whereasadrawingportfoliowillmostlikelynotusephotographyorgraphicdesign.

3DDESIGNPORTFOLIOForthisportfolio,studentsareaskedtodemonstrateunderstandingof3-Ddesignthroughanythree-dimensionalapproach,including,butnotlimitedto,figurativeornonfigurativesculpture,architecturalmodels,metalwork,ceramics,glasswork,installation,performance,assemblage,jewelry-makingand3-Dfabric/fiberarts.Thereisnopreferred(orunacceptable)styleorcontent.

I- THESKETCHBOOKPleasehaveahardboundsketchbook(notasketchpad)nosmallerthan8.5x11andnolargerthan11x14.YouwillneedthisforyoursummerassignmentsandalsoforAPStudioArtnextyear.Pre-projectSketchesEveryportfolio,including3Dand2Dphotoneedsseveralsketchesforeachproject.Sketchescanbeinpencil(orcoloredpenciliffinalartwillbeincolor).Sketchesshouldworkoutessentialdesignissuesbeforeyoustartthefinalproject.Sketchesalsoprovetheworkisyoursandnotcopied.Theseinclude:1. Composition,arrangementsofshapesandobjects.2. Rangeofvalues(darksandlightareas).3. Ifcolorisused,thebasiccolorarrangements

setting(nofloatingheads).Makeuseofdramaticlighting.Donotdoaportraitfromtheneckupplacedinthecenter.ForAPweneedtoseeforeground,middlegroundandbackground,interestinganglesandperspectives.Self-portraitProjectObjective:Dramaticlightingwithstrongdarksandlights.Thefaceshouldhaveoriginalandunusualplacementinpictureformatthatintegrateswiththebackground.Usingdarksandlightsorotherelementsinthebackgroundcreatesunity.Onpapernolargerthan18x24.butnosmallerthanapprox.9x12,usepencil,charcoal,pastel,orotherdrawingmedia.Considerusingforcedperspectiveorsomekindofgridordrawingthefeaturesrealistically,cuttingthemoutandthenrearrangingthemasacollage.

2. STILLLIFE:Setupastilllifewithstronglightsource,nearawindoworwithsidelight.Possibleobjects:eggsontornorcrumpledpaper,tincansorglassjars,fruitondrapery,acollectionofbrushes,agroupingofshoes,orraidthevegetablebinoftherefrigerator.Besuretocomposetheentirepage.

Stilllifedrawingobjectives:

• Stronglightsanddarks• Sidelighting(dramatic)• Balancedgroupingofobjects• Atleast5objects(Youmayhave3butthenyoumustutilizecroppingandshadows)• Thesepiecesshowhowaneffectiveuseofsidelightingcancreateadramaticeffectinan

otherwisemundanegroupingofobjects.Yourdrawingshouldhaveafullrangeofvaluefromlighttodarkinordertocreateastrongimpact.

• Theartisthasusedinterestinganglesandconsideredthenegativespacearoundtheobjectsandhascroppedthecompositionsothattheobjectsdon’tfloatinspace.

3. ShowREFLECTIONSinametallicobjectorotherreflectivesurface:Zeroinonasectionofreflectiveobjects,suchasaclose-upofpartofabikeormotorcycle,carbumper,spoons,aneggbeaterorotherobjectsorsurfacesthatreflecttheirsurroundings.Createacompositionmakinguseofhard-edgereflectionsandcastshadows.Includeotherdetailorbackgroundthatcreatesagoodcomposition.

2DDESIGNASSIGNMENTS(withageneralemphasis-generalemphasismayalsodooneprojectfromtheother2DDesignlists,photoandgraphicdesign):

1. Getoutside!TakeyourcameraorsketchbookanddoaseriesofNATURECLOSEUPsketches.Selectoneandrenderinpencil.Concentrateonvaluesandtextures.Makesureyouhavearangeofvaluesfromlighttodark.Getverydetailedonthetexture.Addyourownuniquestyle.Youmayusecollage.Consideraddingasplashofcolorinadifferentmedium(ink,watercolor,etc.)Ifusingphotographyforthisassignment,takeatleast10closeupphotos,shootinblackandwhiteifpossible,makesureyouhavegoodlightingandarangeofvalues.

2. ABSTRACTIONResearchabstractionandtheworksofTomC.FedroandPabloPicasso.Createanabstractworksimilartotheirdesigns—faces,animals,objects,etc.Findanareaofemphasisandmakesureitstandsout.Showforeground,middlegroundandbackground.Makesureyouusesizevariationandoverlapping.Bringyourownuniquestyletothisproject.Youmayusecoloredpencil/pastel,acryliconcanvasboardorPhotoshop/Illustratorforthisassignment.

3. FIVECHAIRSCompileagroupingof5ormorechairs-chairscanbeallthesameoravarietyofcolors,styles,heights,andshapes.Chairscanintersecteachother,overlap,orbetransparent.Thiscanbecomearealisticorcubisticpiece.Tryoutdifferentcolorrelationships,forexample:makethemcomplimentary,analogous,primary,ortriadic.Concentrateonthenegativespace.Shadingokaybutnotnecessary.Assignmentmaybealinedrawingorusecolor.Photostudentstakeatleast10images.

2DDesignwithaPHOTOEmphasis:

Eachphotoassignmentshouldtakeaminimumof2“rollsoffilm”(40-50photos)tochoosefrom,displayforethought,goodcomposition,exceptionalcraftsmanship,havematuresubjectmatter(avoidtrite,overusedsymbols),benosmallerthan4"x6"andnolargerthan18"x24".Goodcompositionmeansconsiderthebackgroundaswellastheforeground.Thenegativespaceshouldbeasattractiveasthepositiveforms.

Youwillneed:

•AdigitalSLRandora35mmSLR•Aflashdrive(2GBorlarger)•Asketchbookjournaltojotideasdown,makesketchesin,anddoallwrittenworkbelowin.•Photoshoporsimilarprogram

PROJECTS

1. Workwithpeople,peopleandmorepeople:tryposedshotsindifferentlighting,tryinformalstreetportraits,trygroupportraits,trypeopleinpositionswherethebackgroundhelpsexplainthephotoTrysometime-lapsephotography.Createmanytypesofimages.ResearchphotographersLeeFriedlander(streetphotosandReflections)andRobertFrank(TheAmericans)forInspiration.

2. PhotographsomethingthatdealswithanEXTREMEORFORCEDPERSPECTIVE.Thinkofcompositionandleadingtheeyeintothework.Considerthecroppingandnegativespace.

3. PHOTOMONTAGEINCOLORUsecolorprintfilmORadigitalcamera.(Digitalimagesmustbeprintedonphotographicpaperforthisassignment)

Usingcolorfilm(couldusepolaroidstylefilm)oradigitalcamerashootaninterestingcolorfulsubject,keepinginmindasyoushoottheimagesthatyouwillreassemblethemultipleimagesintoonePhotomontageimage.(Trycroppinginonyourcolorfulsubjectsoyoucan’ttellwhatthesubjectisuntilyouputittogetherlater.)

Goal:ThisprojectissimilartoworkdonebyDavidHockney(ifyoudon’tknowhiswork,lookhimup);however,forthisassignment,youwillwanttocreateanabstractionofthesubjectandpayparticularattentiontousingcolorasadesigntoolinthisassignment.Makesuretotakemanydifferentanglesofthesamething—domacro,mediumshotsandlongshotssoyouhaveavarietytochoosefrom.

3DDESIGN-ChooseTWOoftheFourProjectsbelowforyourSummerAssignment

1. ChangingPerceptualResponsestoanobjectbyMakingitLarger:selectasubjectforyourcompositionthatisnormallyquitesmall,suchasapaperclip,nailclipper,wristwatch,corkscrew,electricalormechanicalparts,bugsorothersmallcreatures,etc.andrecreatethesubjectonagiantscale:Makeasoftsculpturebycuttingfabricsandflexiblematerials,whicharethensewn,stuffed,stitched,tapedanddecorated(paperbagsworkwellforthis);orcreatealargerigidstructurebyusingcardboardandtape.LookattheworkofClaesOldenburg,FlorentijnandAliciaMartin.

2. CreatinganAestheticObjectfromanAbandonedDerelict:Findaninterestingobjectfromthegarage,attic,fleamarket,auction,orsecond-handstore.Transformtheobjectbycoveringitsentiresurfacewithtexturalmaterials:mosaic,pebbles,glass,mirrors,feathers,flocking,yarn,paper,sand,photos,rope,coins,marbleorgranitechips,smallerobjects,etc.Dothisbyusingwhiteglue(Aileen’sTackyGlueisgreat.Grouptextures/colorstogethertoformpattern.(Usetilecementtoattachheaviermaterials.)LookattheartistFedericoUribe.

3. MakeanABSTRACTsculptureusingscrapsofwood.Mustbeatleast15inchestall(thoughmaybetaller.)Paintallorpart.Considersandingthewoodtomakeitlookaged.Consideraddingdoorknobs,keys,hinges,orotheritemsinanabstractway.LookattheworkofAaronS.Moran.

4. CreateaCollectionorRetablo.Constructacontainer,boxoranothermeanstodisplayyourpiece.Usetheartelementsanddesignprinciplestocreateunity,balance,contrast,etc.LookattheworkofJosephCornell,BetyeSaarandLouiseNevelsonorDayoftheDeadretablosforinspiration.ConsiderusingacigarboxandmakingthenpaintingobjectsoutofSculpy.
