OBJECTIVE:In this walking activity we plan to get to the

ansite fortress where an important event in the conquest of Gran Canaria took place.

Students will learn about this historical episode while also learning about the environment of the area and its geology,fauna and flora.

We start our journey in Santa Lucia’s park

First visit: The old almazara (oil mill)

Oil-rich olives were processed mechanically to extract the valuable oils for thousands of years, typically using vertical millstone moving around a central post to crush or bruise the seeds or fruit which can then be stamped or pressed to extract the oil.

HAO MUSEUMWe continue in direccion to the Hao museum

The Hao museum is mainly an archeological one and exhibit a lot ofRemains of archeological sites of the area and also botanical,zoological and etnographic ones.

CANTONERA

Cantonera/tronera: in Gran Canaria, is a deposit with recipients to store water from wells and reservoirs and distribute it proporcionaly between the farmers . Generally ,the word cantonera is used in the south of the island, while in the north the word "tronera"can be used.

LA SORRUEDA

In the basin of the Tirajana Gully one finds an enclave of great scenic value. La Sorrueda Dam and Palm Tree Reserve offers visitors one of the most beautiful palm tree areas on the island of Gran Canaria, sheltered by imposing mountains and cliffs.The dam has a capacity of 3.000.000 m3 and its outer wall is made of stones of different colours.

PHOENIX CANARIENSIS

A natural symbol of the islands, the Canary Island Palm Tree is a beautiful native tree that grows between 10 and 500 meters and can live up to 3 centuries. It is a protected specie now.

But many other plants are found in the rich countryside

THIS IS THE PLACE WHERE THE LAST BATTLE OF THE CONQUEST OF GRAN CANARIA TOOK PLACE

In this natural fortress the indigenous people of Gran Canaria resisted the siege of the Spanish conquerors(Pedro de Vera).Finally they surrendered in 1485 through the mediation of Tenesor Semidan(Fernando Guanarteme).All of them except two: Bentejui and the Faycan of Telde(Faycan means great priest) who decided to take their lives throwing themselves from the top of the mountain while shouting: ATIS TIRMA(long live the sacred mountain)

GUANARTEME: Is the name given to the kings of the island.At the moment of the conquest there were two Guanartemes in the island.FAYCAN: They were very influencial priests that asisted the Guanartemes
