• On wiki site(http://iowadirectcare.wikispaces.com/home): – Prepare to Care informational document– Instructor and Community College lists

So… What should I be talking about?

• Direct care is a high demand profession• Recruitment and retention challenges:

– High turnover– Lack of standardized training– Low pay; very little recognition

• Direct Care Worker Advisory Council recommended standardized training and credentials issued by a licensing board, based on research

What should I be talking about? Cont.

• Board has not been created, but challenges remain and demand is bigger than ever – Need 20,000 more DCPs between now and

2020

• Prepare to Care is the state’s first ever comprehensive direct care curriculum. – Standardized training with state-issued

certificates– Legislative charge to make it available

statewide

What should I be talking about? Cont.

• Ongoing challenges:– Difficult to implement a standardized training

without requirements for DCPs or employers– Outreach: getting word out to DCPs and

employers– Making direct care an appealing career that

people want to go into and stay in – the Board credentials would’ve helped elevate the profession
