Application
Silicon is an important alloying element in
most medium strength and some high
strength wrought Aluminium alloys in the
international standard AA 6000 and AA
2000 series. It also features as a major
element in foundry casting alloys and in
brazing alloys.
The presence of Silicon in Aluminium
alloys:
imparts heat treatable properties in
balanced combination with Magnesium
enhances the fluidity of casting alloys
lowers the melting point for brazing
alloys
Although addition as elemental Silicon is
possible, the use of a master alloy offers
distinct advantages:
shorter dissolution times
alloying at lower temperatures
higher accuracy to meet specified
composition limits
improved metal yield.
Product description
AlSi master alloys are available in notched
waffle ingots of approximately 7 kg unit
weight. The ingots are
stacked on wooden
pallets, strapped and
shrink wrapped with
plastic foil to protect the
alloy against moisture. The master alloy is
colour coded according
to international
standards. Each pallet
carries a label showing
the batch number and
nominal alloy
composition.
Metallographic structure
The phase diagram indicates that Silicon is
present in two forms: the primary Silicon
crystals and the Aluminium-Silicon
eutectic. The primary Silicon phase isuniformly dispersed in the eutectic matrix.
Recommended addition practice
AlSi master alloys can be introduced to the
furnace at any time during the charging
and melting cycle. However, additions to a
molten bath of metal are recommended to
gain optimum yields. Thorough stirring
will ensure homogeneity. There is no
interference from other metal treatments.
Storage
The alloys must be stored in a dry area to
avoid excessive oxidation.
A Material Safety Data Sheet is available.
