In a small way you have experienced what the at-risk and homeless youth you work with experience. What would you do if circumstance conspired against you?

An Experiment

What do you need to know, when most of recorded knowledge is a mouse-click away?

In light of this…what do students still need to memorize?

How do we prepare our students for jobs that don’t yet exist- -

using technologies that haven’t yet been invented . . .

in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet?

If at-risk students have a limited experience and knowledge-base from which to draw, will Web access to information help to fill in the gaps?

If you only have a student with you for a few days, weeks, or months is sequentially taught curriculum going to make sense?

Should we be teaching children or helping them learn?

A Wise Man Once Said…

You may very well be the ONLY significant adult relationship that child ever experiences.

Make it count!

What children need is for someone to tell them it doesn’t matter what their circumstance is or who their parents are—

what matters most is where they are going now and the specifics of how to succeed.

They need to know…

It is possible to breakout of generational poverty

It is possible to break the abusive parent cycle

It is possible to reinvent yourself and never look back.

Creativity

Creativity is now as important in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status.

If you're not prepared to be wrong then you will never come up with anything original.

We don't grow into creativity we grow out of it, or rather, we get educated out of it.

Educators need to view the classroom through the eyes of a child or youth who is hungry, tired, crying out for love, support and stability.

Strategies that Work with Children of Poverty

"Teachers can draw on technology applications to simulate real-world environments and create actual environments for experimentation, so that students can carry out authentic tasks as real workers would, explore new terrains, meet people of different cultures, and use a variety of tools to gather information and solve problems."

Quit worrying about what they can’t do– and concentrate on what they can do!

Let them fly where they can fly and walk where they need to walk. They do know how to fly.

Let them learn through their strength and they will gain the self-confidence to achieve.
