Welcome to your maths lessons this week!

This week we’re going to re-visit and revise addition and subtraction.

We will check our written methods are secure and

accurate for arithmetic and then that we can apply that knowledge

in reasoning and problem solving.

Hope you enjoy it …

With written methods, you need to make sure you line up the different place values.

The decimal point will also need to be lined up.

Let’s think back to when we did multiplication and

division a few weeks ago. We agreed that the

equals sign means ‘the same as’ or ‘balanced

331 + = 584 253

The value of the right side is 584. Because

an equals sign is placed between the two

calculations, the calculation on the left

side must have a value of 584, too. So

something added to 331 is 584.

So, how do we calculate the missing number?

We use the inverse’ (subtraction).

584 - 331 = 253 : 331 + = 584 253

+ 127 = 635

443 - = 221

569 - = 198

+ 87 = 587

64 + 87 = - 30

256 - 118 = + 34

396 + = 518 - 34

197 - = 65 + 112

Try out these missing number calculations using

your knowledge of the ‘inverse’. Make sure you

check the addition and subtraction signs carefully

+ 127 = 635 508

443 - = 221 222

569 - = 198 371

+ 87 = 587 500

64 + 87 = - 30 181

256 - 118 = + 34 104

396 + = 518 - 34 88

197 - = 65 + 112 20

Try out these missing number calculations using your knowledge of the

‘inverse’. Make sure you check the addition and subtraction signs carefully
