4

In Acts 18, beginning with verse 23, Paul has begun his third missionary journey.

5

But we are going to see some of what God was doing with those left behind on his second journey.

Priscilla and Aquila in Ephesus

Started a church, probably in someone's home.

One Sunday they had a visitor in church.

6

Acts 18:24 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man (orator, communicator), and mighty in the (Old Testament) Scriptures, came to Ephesus.

While Paul was gone back home, Apollos came to Ephesus.

He knew the Old Testament Scriptures well, and he knew of John's baptism unto repentance,

But knew nothing of salvation through Jesus Christ, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

25 This man was instructed in the Way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. 26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the Way of God more perfectly.

He knew some things; he spoke well.

Priscilla and Aquila taught him the rest of the Truth. He must have had a teachable spirit -- humility.

9

He was fervent in the spirit.

He was red hot and raring to go.Excited! Enthusiastic!

We could use a lot more of that in the church today.

27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: 28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the Scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

11

Armed with this new doctrine Apollos crossed the Aegean Sea to Achaia (probably at Corinth) where he was mightily used. He vigorously refuted the Jews demonstrating from the Scriptures (which he knew well,), that Jesus is the Messiah. This was Paul’s approach as well. So forceful was Apollos’ ministry that factious believers at Corinth formed an Apollos party (1 Cor 1:12). There is no indication that Apollos promoted such a faction and Paul nowhere held him accountable for it.

We see clearly here that God uses different men to reach different people.

Different personalities Different gifts

Different approach

Paul had already taken the Gospel to this area.

Yet, Apollos reached many people who had not received the Gospel when Paul was there.

Be ready and willing to beused of God.
