Active Listening Skills Talk Less and Listen More

Vocabulary

• 1. Encouraging

• Purpose: to show interest and encourage the other person to keep talking

• How To Do It: Do not agree or disagree• Example: hey man, that’s cool. Can you tell

me more?

Vocabulary

• Clarifying

• Purpose: To help make clear what is being said; to get more accurate and understandable information.

• How to Do It: Ask questions that cannot be answered with a Yes or No.

• Example: When did this happen? What do you mean by this?

Vocabulary

• Paraphrasing

• Purpose To show the other person you understand what they are saying.

• How to Do It Restate what the speaker says using different words.

• Example So, you mean she lied to you and now you want to tell her off. Is that what you are talking about?

• Reflecting

• Purpose To further your understanding by thinking seriously about what is being said; take time to think longer and harder and maybe catch something you missed earlier.

• Example Oh, now I get it. I am hearing you know.

Top 10 listening Strategies

• 1. Concentrate, pay attention and really make an effort to listen

• 2. Show honest interest by nodding your head and saying “I get it”.

• 3. Let the speaker talk. Interruptions should only be made to make sure you understand what the other person is saying.

• 4. Make sure you understand the meaning of all words the speaker is using.

• 5. Let the speaker finish his entire communication.
