This report forms part of the deliverables from a project called "FoodMicroSystems"
which has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework
Programme FP7/2007‐2013 under grant agreement n° 287634. The Community is
not responsible for any use that might be made of the content of this publication.
FoodMicroSystems aims at initiating the implementation of microsystems & smart
miniaturised systems in the food sector by improving cooperation between suppliers
and users of microsystems for food/beverage quality and safety.
The project runs from September 2011 to August 2013, it involves nine partners and
is coordinated by ACTIA (Association de Coordination Technique pour l'Industrie
Agro Alimentaire, France). More information on the project can be found at

1 Introduction
The WP5 “Communication and dissemination” of FoodMicroSystems is gathering activities related to the communication of the project results. The activities are divided into three tasks: task 5.1 “Information platform” concerns the development and the update of the project website, task 5.2 “Dissemination” gathers dissemination activities and task 5.3 “Information days and training” includes the organisation of three training sessions for the microsystems researchers and four information days for the food insustry. The Work Package has six deliverables: D5.1.1 (Website), D.5.1.2 (Website activity report), D5.2.1 (Information campaign report 1), D5.2.2 (Information campaign report 2), D5.3.1 (Report on training sessions) and D5.3.2 (Report on info days). The task 5.2 includes: ‐ The preparation and dissemination of informative material (brochures, web pages, presentations) using the results of the studies prepared in the different WPs. ‐ The continuous dissemination of the project’s results as well as the organisation of two information campaigns. ‐ The organisation of bilateral meetings, direct contacts with the main actors (EC, EURIPIDES, ETPs, national research agencies, associations like CIAA or BEUC) and the presentation of the project results during conferences and fairs organised outside the project. The deliverable D5.2.2 “Information campaign report 2” complements the D5.2.1.
5
2 Methodology
The dissemination plan of the project is based on four main components: (1) the information platform, (2) the organisation of information campaigns (3) direct contacts, bilateral meetings and presentation at conferences and (4) the organisation of training sessions and information days. The originality is that a “personalised approach” is implemented: during the first months of the project, a list of persons potentially interested by FoodMicroSystems is established. They are then registered into an on‐line directory and receive personalised emails with information related to the project during the entire duration of the project. This approach fits very well projects that require an engagement of the target audience in the activities: it is the case of FoodMicroSystems as the opinion of the stakeholders needs to be taken into account for the development of the roadmaps. A similar approach has been previously successfully implemented by ACTIA in the project www.agrifoodresults.eu. During the second year of the project, the main objective for the task 5.2 “Dissemination” was to continuously inform stakeholders on the project results and achievements by sending them regular emails. The list of list of stakeholders has been continuously updated with participants to the events organised within the project. Other activities included the participation to events organised outside the project.
3 Results
3.1 Communication material The project leaflet has been prepared duringt he previous period. During this period, the preparation of communication materials mainly consisted in preparing flyers for the events organised within the project. The content of the flyers have been prepared by the organiser of the event, the flyer have been prepared by ACTIA. EQY coordinated the activity. Each flyer has been published on the website and sent by email with the invitations to the event. Copies of these materials are presented below:

EMAIL 13 De : FoodMicroSystems [mailto:contact@foodmicrosystems.eu] Envoyé : vendredi 3 mai 2013 16:31 À : Olivier Chartier Objet : Your ideas on microsystems in food
Dear Olivier Chartier,
FoodMicroSystems published for consultation its report on the food industry demand for microsystems at http://www.foodmicrosystems.eu/?news=consultation. We invite you to comment on the report and to share your ideas on the needs and constraints for implementing smart systems in the food sector. The report contributes to current EU discussions about the next Research Framework Programme (Horizon 2020).
We particularly wish to learn your reactions to our assessment on the needs and the constraints for implementing microsystems in the food sector: - Do you agree that safety, quality, sustainability and efficiency are the main drivers? - Do you agree that the main demand is for in-line, on-line and at line measurement solutions? - What should be done to facilitate the introduction of microsystems in the food sector?
After we receive your comments, we will update the report and submit it to DG CONNECT and DG RESEARCH.
Please send your answers before the 24 May and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any question.
We look forward to your answers,

Report on food industry demand for microsystems
Executive summary: key findings from the report
1) With more than 270.000 companies, the food sector represents a significant market for developers of microsystems solutions. It includes a limited number of large companies controlling many production sites and a high number of small producers supplied by a very large number of farmers (e.g. 1 million farms delivering milk to 5000 processors in the EU).
2) One of the key drivers for implementing microsystems in the food sector is food safety: the food industry needs solutions that guarantee that the food is safe for the consumers. There is a demand for in‐line solutions (continuous measurement) as well as for portable and easy‐to‐use devices. 3) Another key driver is related to food quality: a better monitoring of the quality parameters of the raw materials, of materials during processing and of the final products is needed to optimise the processes. The demand is mostly for solutions allowing continuous and simultaneous measurements of several parameters. Portable devices for in‐situ measurements are also in demand.
4) The recent “horse meat” crisis also reveals that there is a market for solutions allowing authentication (solutions to detect the origin of the food products), traceability and detection of fraud.
5) Solutions to optimise the water and energy consumption are needed to decrease the impact of the industry on the environment and to reduce the production costs. Tools allowing the optimisation of cleaning operations are particularly in demand.
6) Intelligent packaging that can monitor the deterioration of food products and increase their shelf‐life are also interesting innovations.
7) Overall, there is a strong demand from the industry for in‐line, on‐line and at‐line measurement solutions that help to address the four key challenges of the sector (safety, quality, sustainability and efficiency). These solutions should be embedded in the process management systems of the industry to allow actions (measurement is not enough, they need to be utilised).
8) The main technological constraints are related to (i) the robustness of the devices (ii) the reliability of the measures and (iii) the compatibility with food processes. The sampling strategy (how many measures, when, where etc.) can also be a challenge.
9) There are important organisational constraints for developers of microsystems solutions interested to enter the food industry market. A very good knowledge of the sector and of its practices is needed from the conception phases so that the solutions proposed are properly embedded in the management practices of the food producers. New detection and measurement solutions are not a need per se: the results of the measurements should trigger actions that should be cost‐effective (e.g. optimise the use of inputs or of processes parameters to reduce costs, reduce the amount of non‐conformity to decrease losses etc.).

Dear Olivier Chartier,
The details on the first opportunities in Horizon 2020 are now available: the first call for proposals will close on the 23 April 2014. The food sector is identified as an application area for the calls ICT-2-2014 and ICT-28-2015. FoodMicroSystems welcomes these developments, in particular the addition of innovations related to "process control" in the priorities of the call ICT-28.
The FoodMicroSystems roadmaps have been published on our website. Four reports are available: three roadmaps for the implementation of microsystems in the dairy, meat and beverage sectors and one final report. This final report provides suggestions to address the technological needs in three areas: chemical and biochemical electronic sensors, microorganism detection and tracking & tracing systems.
We invite you to read the reports at the link below and to share with us any comments you may have on these documents as well as your ideas for our final recommendations to the European Commission before the 22 November 2013.
With this email we also take the opportunity to remind you that a few places are still available for the last FoodMicroSystems information day organised in Paris on the 27 November 2013.

Dear Olivier Chartier,
The last FoodMicroSystems event has been organised in Paris on the 27 November. It is a great achievement for us that several Horizon 2020 call for proposals dedicated to microsystems focus on the food industry.
We now invite you to seize the opportunity and to prepare proposals. It is indeed important to demonstrate the interest of the research community. It is also a way to encourage the EC to continue to support the implementation of microsystems in the food sector in their future call for proposals.
The FoodMicroSystems roadmaps contain a lot of information and we hope they will provide you with ideas for your future activities. You can of course make reference to them in your Horizon 2020 applications. You can also adapt them with your ideas. We also encourage you to use the roadmap approach as a tool for planning your own R&D programmes.
We are pleased to share with you the main conclusions presented at the event at the link below and we wish you a lot of success in your future projects.

4 Conclusions
The dissemination activities have been implemented in agreement with the initial strategy: a personalised approached based on personal emails sent to persons potentially interested in the utilization of the project results. The first email was sent to 265 persons and during 2013, the distribution list reached 413 persons. The approach was successful as proven by the good participation to the events organized during the project (for example an average of 25 persons for the information days organized in WP5) or the success of the consultation organized in the WP3 (20 written contributions received). The combination of personal email, organization of events and participation to events organised outside the project allowed to successfully inform the food and microsystems communities on the project and its results.
