Residency Program Directors Update For CORD, 2009

R1 RequirementsPassing Rate for Part I

R1 RequirementsShould be under the direction of the

Orthopaedic Residency Director6 Months of Core Surgery-

2 months General Surgery4 months: Systemic Trauma, Vascular, Burns,

SICU3 Months ‘ Non orthopaedic elective’:

ED, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Peds Surgery, PM&R, Rheumatology, MICU, CICU, MSK Radiology, Anesthesiology/ Pain

Months are 4 weeks or calendar month!

Transfers from non-orthipaedic R1 programs

Call ABOS and write a plan outlining the corrections for the R1 as soon as possible. Provide

written corroboration of what rotations were done. Make the changes early and don’t argue

with interpretations. Notify ACGME as well about the changes.

Example- R1 at Bid State U transfers to Big Blue U ResidencyBig U Rotations:

3 months General Surgery2 months Trauma Surgery1 month Plastic/Hand Surgery1 month ED2 months Cardiothoracic and ICU1 month Vascular Surgery1 month Neurosurgery1 month Ortho

No- This R1 did not perform SICU at Big State U, this needs to be addressed in a plan by the

Big Blue Program Director.

75% over a 5 year timeNot reviewed annually but at each RRC

review

Each Program Director gets a summary of how their residents performed in the 18

Content Domains. This is to help with the teaching curriculum.

This is the resident’s responsibility, have each R5 createan account online at abos.org –

October 1.

Deadline for online application December 15, late deadline January 8. There are no

exceptions to the deadline!

Program Directors receive 2 written notices- one with the summary of results from prior

year part I and second early November, reminding them to have R5 residents make

their applications.

1st Time US Residents ~ 92% passing rate, those who miss the deadline or who skip the

exam ~ 90% passing on the first examination.
