A Note from Pastor Karla

Happy November church family!

The idea of us being a family has been a large part of my conversations with many of you over this last month. In the middle of October, 120 of us (half children, half adults) ventured to Camp Marston in Julian for the weekend where we talked about what it means to create

space not only for ourselves and God, but also for one another. In our busy society, it is becoming increasingly

more difficult to make that kind of space. Sadly, organic community rarely happens anymore. The best thing about going to Family Camp is the lack of agenda.

If your life is anything like mine, then getting through the day, with the barrage of information coming our way, is an accomplishment. Sometimes I'm just glad to have survived! But, God wants more for us than just survival, God wants us to thrive. Thriving doesn't simply happen, it requires us to make different choices and to be intentional about our living. Thriving also rarely happens alone, we all need some sort of life support.

On Sunday mornings we have been discussing Jesus' primary message, the Kingdom of God, namely that this Kingdom is both "near" and "not yet", through the dissection of his parables. The parables have layers of meaning, but the themes we hear over and over again in Jesus' teaching are themes of inclusion, sharing, and having an outward purpose. These themes have one thing in common and cannot occur without it---other people. (Continued on Page 2)

The holiday season, if we can look past the tinsel and twinkling lights, is full of ways to live out the Kingdom of God. The first weeks of November, sometimes known as the calm before the storm, present a unique opportunity to be purposeful as we enter into that crazy and joyous time of year.

So, as the nights get longer and the days get shorter, will you make time to create space in your life for God to commune with you? And in that communing will you remain open to choosing a new way to dive deeper into community with other people? It doesn't have to be a full on, total immersion experience. Small steps are the entry into any transformation.

Session Meeting Highlights October 25, 2017

Joel Miller, Chair of the Stewardship Committee reported that 135 families have made a pledge for 2018 for a total of $503,000 toward a total pledge goal of $1,000,000.

The Ministry Information Form (MIF) required to recruit a new Associate Pastor has been submitted to the Presbytery for approval. Once approved, and a Presbytery representative to the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee has been named, recruitment activities will begin.

Rev. Shaw announced that Melissa Mullins, currently Communica-tions Coordinator, has accepted an offer to become Business Administrator beginning November 1. This position replaces a portion of Don Brenneman’s responsibilities as he retires at the end of the year.

Steve Smith, Chair of the Finance Committee, said that the newly formed Audit Committee is at work and has met with the church outside auditors to develop an internal audit plan.

Rev. Shaw reported on the recent staff retreat, which resulted in revised Vision and Mission Statements for the church. She shared details with session.

Steve Smith, Chair of the Finance Committee, said that planning for the 2018 church operating budget is on track, with a preliminary budget scheduled to be presented in December and a final budget approved by session in January.

Staffing Update from Pastor Karla

I have an exciting announcement for you! As many of you know, we are in process of hiring a lot of positions around here, due to the transition of my position and because of Don's retire-ment at the end of the year. Both my old AP position and Don's position are being split into two positions (half-time and full-time). The half of Don's position that is becoming full-time is a new position still titled Business Administrator, which will be expanded to include strategic elements in thinking about our church and its structures.

I am pleased to announce, effective November 1, Melissa Mullins will be stepping into this role. She will be overlapping with Don his last two months here so that we might have a smooth transition.

MOM’S CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE

During the month of November, please donate toys for the

children of E-5 and below military families that are part of

Military Outreach Ministries. The toys are for children ages

newborns to 12. Please bring the unwrapped toys to the

MOM’s table on the plaza every Sunday in November or

leave them in the MOM’s toy box in the church office during

the week. If you don’t want to shop, donations of cash or

checks (made out to PLCPC) are also needed to help buy bi-

cycles and toys for the children. On December 2 there will be

a MOM’s toy store in the FLC to distribute toys to the fami-

lies. If you would like to help with the toy store please see

one of the volunteers on the plaza. For more information

Caring for our Homebound Church Members

Two new outreach ministries have been developed to serve our

cherished church members who are no longer able to attend

church. Red Brick Visitors, an idea borne from the hearts of three

caring gentlemen church members, provides a friendly visit to

church members at home to remind them they are cared for and

loved by the church. Volunteers are trained and coordinated by

Elaine Burrell, MSW, Director of Senior Ministry.

Communion At Home is also now available by trained Elders.

Currently, 9 Elders, trained by Pastor Chris Lenocker, are available

to provide the Holy Sacrament at a time that is convenient and

comfortable for the at-home member.

If you know of someone who would like a home visit, or if you

would like to become a volunteer Red Brick Visitor, please contact

Elaine Burrell at Ext. 210 or elaine@pointlomachurch.org. If you

know of someone who would like to receive Communion at Home,

please contact Ann Simoneau at Ext. 203.

As always, visits from the Senior Pastor as well as Deacon flowers,

love baskets and other outreach ministries are also available. Con-

CHILD CHECK-IN UPDATE

Our new electronic Child Check-In system has slowly been implemented over the last month and has been well

received by our parents with nursery or Sunday School age children. While this change was made with safety in

mind, as well as for accuracy of attendance tracking there have been a few unforeseen benefits.

Our staff has had more face time with families as they check in their children. We have a built-in opportunity to

greet them and introduce ourselves if they are new or visiting. By parents having to check their children in we

have a chance to capture their contact information or update existing data. This is a huge gain in the area of con-

sistent communication with our families.

Since children now arrive to their Sunday School class with their nametags on, the teacher spends less time on this

task and more time on teaching them God’s word. Child allergies are discretely printed on the name tags so

teachers can be alerted to this important information if needed. Although we have always had a child check in

system in the classrooms, it is now more visible to the larger congregation since it is done electronically in the

narthex of the Chapel and Sanctuary before our services begin.

FAMILY CAMP 2017

Over 100 children and adults attended Family Camp in October at Camp Marston.

Meaningful connections, lots of laughs and new adventures were had by all. A special

thanks to the planning team and those who filled in on Sunday while the families

enjoyed worship service at the camp.
