• interprets input from senses

• controls movement of skeletal muscles

• divided into right half & left half

– right half creativity & artistic ability

– left half math skills, speech, writing, logical thinking

peripheral nervous system

• all the nerves located outside of central nervous system

• divided into 2 groups:

1. somatic system- controls voluntary actions

2. autonomic system- controls involuntary actions

reflex• automatic response that occurs

very rapidly & without conscious control

nervous system injuries

1. concussion= bruiselike injury of brain

2. spinal cord injury= spinal cord is cut or crushed
