American Healthcare Services, LLC, is cel-ebrating this year’s National Nurses Week byrecognizing the contributions its current RNsmake and looking for new staff members to joinits dedicated team. The Troy-based providerof health care staffing will hold a family eventto honor its nurses during the week, celebratedannually May 6 through May 12 by theAmerican Nurses Association to honornurses and all they do.“We at American Healthcare Services thank
our nurses every chance we get, but NursesWeek is a special occasion, and we take timeout to acknowledge and celebrate what they doevery day,” says Clare Lirio, recruiting man-ager. “We do have out-of-state travel nurses, and we make it a point to let them know that weappreciate what they do.”The theme for this year’s Nurses Week is
“Nurses – Delivering Quality & Innovationin Patient Care.” According to Lirio, puttingpatients first is the most important skill foragency nurses.“Our nurses are very versatile; most of them
can work from one unit to another and functionas well as a staff nurse on the unit can,” shesays. “They are flexible and fill in when theyare needed. We have gotten numerous acco-lades from patients and hospital clients for ournurses.”
Help WantedThe agency, which also has an office in
Irving, Texas, has approximately 110 employeesand currently is recruiting RNs. “We can easilydouble our size, given the right candidates,”Lirio says. In addition to versatility, candidatesalso should be professional, knowledgeable andskilled, and have an open mind and a caring, positive attitude, according to Lirio.“Dedicated nurses mean better care, not just
to AHS and our clients, but to health care asa whole,” she says. “Our nurses are happy andcontent, which makes for loyal and dedicatedemployees. Their positive energy makes a bigdifference when they are working with the pa-tients they deal with day in and day out.”In return, nurses at AHS receive:
Great benefits. “Working for an agency doesnot mean just getting a higher pay rate,” Liriosays. “With AHS, you can accomplish morethan that.” That includes medical, dental andvision benefits, as well as supplemental insur-ance, 401(k) and a self-funded vacation bank.Employees also receive 24/7 support.Opportunity to show your skills. AHS’ clients
expect to have nurses who can hit the groundrunning when they arrive. “Our employees’longevity and experience are directly exhibitedin their excellent patient care,” Lirio says. “Ourcustomers expect and deserve experiencedprofessionals to arrive on their unit and blendright in, so the unit is operating at optimal ef-ficiency.”Chance to give back. AHS participates in ini-
tiatives that support the fight against diabetesand breast cancer. “Given that we are also anapproved health care provider to the federalgovernment, we have the privilege of providing
quality care to our veterans,” Lirio says. “Aspart of providing that care, we have donatedclothing and other sundry supplies to thoseveterans who are unable to attain those itemson their own.”To apply, visit www.AHSLLC.com and click

Work Smarts
Easy ways toinitiate changeA business executive who
pays with a $20 bill asks a Zenmaster who is working as a hotdog vendor for change.“Change comes fromwithin,” the mastersays. That’s where change
usually needs to origi-nate. I often have heardexecutives and theirworkers talk aboutchange but do nothingabout it. They com-plain about the presentprocess yet offer no solutions.Instead, they wait for others toinstitute change and then consis-tently reject potential solutions. Why? Because people have
exactly what they want – if theywanted something different, theywould have something differ-ent. Some people actually arecomfortable being depressed orfrustrated. They have created acomfort zone out of managingthese emotions and often willsearch out these environments. We are a complacent and
amiable society. Wedon’t like change. Itupsets our routine, creates uneasiness andoften leaves us with illfeelings. And that’s whywe stagnate, becom-ing complacent yetfrustrated at the sametime, not able to moveforward in our careersor continue to grow
with the opportunities that pres-ent themselves. If you want toengineer change try:Soliciting the input of others.
Change is more palatable when
it’s engineered through a group-thinking process rather thana one-person or managementdirective.Selling the benefits of your
recommendations. Coworkersdon’t like being told what to do,so explain the “why” and make itrelatable to them.Creating an environment com-
mitted to reinforcing the change.New policies or procedures oftenwill lead back to old habitualways if there’s no positive rein-forcement.As author and speaker Denis
Waitley said, “There are twoprimary choices in life: to acceptconditions as they exist or acceptthe responsibility for changingthem.”Bruce Rosenblat is president

4 key tips toestate planningI believe most people generally
are preoccupied with manag-ing cash flow and investing. But another area offinances – estate plan-ning – deserves equalattention regardless ofthe amount of moneya person has. Here arefour things to consider:1. Create a will. If
a person dies withouta will, the state’s lawsof intestacy determinewho gets the money. Ifno blood relatives can be found, the money goes to the statetreasury.Should children lose both
parents, the state will name a
guardian to take the children ifno will exists.2. Update beneficiary designa-
tions.A will doesn’t control alarge number of your most valu-able assets. Keep your beneficiarydesignations updated. It’s not un-common for older life insurancepolicies and previous employerretirement plans to be paid out
to ex-spouses or otherunintended parties.3. Protect your
income.Make sure youhave enough disabilityinsurance. Most groupplans are designatedas short term and longterm, and replace lessthan 70 percent ofyour salary. Make sureyou have adequate life
insurance. Calculate the lumpsum that’s needed to produce theamount of income your familywill need, and consider other ex-penses, such as college, mortgage,
etc. Find out how much disabilityand life insurance coverage youhave through work and if anyadditional coverage is availableto you.4. Make medical and finan-
cial arrangements. A living willdocuments your wishes regardingprolonging medical treatments.A medical power of attorneygives someone else the authorityto make health care decisions onyour behalf if you’re too ill orinjured to speak for yourself. Adurable power of attorney givessomeone else the authority tohandle financial transactions onyour behalf, even if you’re able todo so.Robin Thompson is president of
