Memorial Day Memories Diane Kelly – We would plant flowers in
the cemeteries or anywhere.
Bonnie Specht – We put flags on graves
and have graveside services. Memorial
Day was also known as Decoration Day.
Glorianne Tinkey – I
was born on
Memorial Day! My
mother didn’t want to
have me that day but I
came anyway.
Kate Tirk – We treated
it like any other day.
We’d have a cook out.
The kids enjoyed it but
weren’t head over heels
for it.
Millie Haag – We’d take flowers to the
cemetery and make remarks on those who
had passed. Always would go visit
friends. Since there was no work at the
Cooper Bessemer, coworkers would
gather together for meals.
Nancy Perrine – We’d have picnics with
the family. Sometimes we would go up to
Erie, to the lake.
Viola McFadden – I would have family
picnics, nothing too special.
Joan Campbell – I remember the town
having a parade, but I didn’t do too much
as a child.
Nancy Viola – George and I would visit fam-
ily, have a picnic, and celebrate all day long.
Lillian Franceschina – I
remember the Brownie Troops
taking flags to the cemetery
and we would stay for the
ceremony.
Walt Hehman – We’d get
together with the family, if
possible. There would be a
barbeque and it was a nice
time.
Lois Sonntag – Lee and I
would go up to our cabin on the Allegheny
River. We’d go boating and waterskiing. We
went up there for every holiday.
Clara Breese – I remember seeing the parade
in Harrisville. The kids were in the parade,
which was a real treat because we’d get ice
cream. Then we’d have a picnic in our
kitchen.
Mary Joyce Baker – My family always had
picnics. My husband was a veteran. We
would have potato salad, baked beans,
hamburgers on the grill and iced tea instead
of pop because it was better.

My Rememberer
'Cash, check or charge?' I asked, after folding
items the woman wished to purchase. As she
fumbled for her wallet, I noticed a remote control
for a television set in her purse. 'So, do you always
carry your TV remote?' I asked.
'No,' she replied, 'but my husband refused to
come shopping with me, and I figured this was the
most evil thing I could do to him legally.'
My forgetter's getting better,
But my rememberer is broke
To you that may seem funny
But, to me, that is no joke
For when I'm "here" I'm wondering
If I really should be "there"
And, when I try to think it through,
I haven't got a prayer!
Oft times I walk into a room,
Say 'what am I here for?'
I wrack my brain, but all in vain!
A zero, is my score.
At times I put something away
Where it is safe, but, Gee!
The person it is safest from
Is, generally, me!
When shopping I may see someone,
Say 'Hi' and have a chat,
Then, when the person walks away
I ask myself, 'who in the world was that?'
Yes, my forgetter's getting better
While my rememberer is broke,
And it's driving me plumb crazy
And that isn't any joke.
In Warsaw, Poland, Solly visits his rabbi and
complains, 'Life is unbearable. There are nine of us
living in one room. What can I do?'
The rabbi answers, 'Take your goat into the room
with you.'
Solly is incredulous, 'What?' but the rabbi insists,
'Do as I say and come back in a week.'
A week later Solly comes back looking even more
distraught than before, 'We cannot stand it,' Solly
explains to the rabbi, 'the goat is filthy.'
Perspectives
There's always a lot to be thankful for if you take
time to look for it. For example, I'm sitting here
thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don't hurt
I have that dreaded furniture disease ... that's when
your chest is falling into your drawers
When WC Fields, the actor, was in his dotage he
was seen to be reading the Bible by a close friend
who demanded to know what he was looking for.
'Loopholes, dear boy, loopholes,' murmured Fields.
Two elderly people are living in a retirement
home, he a widower and she a widow. They had
known each other for a number of years. One
evening there was a community supper in the big
arena in the Clubhouse. The two were at the same
table, across from one another. As the meal went
on, he took a few admiring glances at her and
finally gathered the courage to ask her, 'Will you
marry me?'
After about six seconds of 'careful
consideration,' she answered 'Yes. Yes, I will!' The
meal ended and, with a few more pleasant
exchanges, they went to their respective places.
Next morning, he was troubled. 'Did she say 'yes' or
did she say 'no'?' He couldn't remember.
Try as he might, he just could not recall. Not
even a faint memory. With trepidation, he went to
the telephone and called her. First, he explained
that he didn't remember as well as he used to.
Then he reviewed the lovely evening past. As he
gained a little more courage, he inquired, 'When I
asked if you would marry me, did you say ' Yes' or
did you say 'No'?'
He was delighted to hear her say, 'Why, I said,
'Yes, yes I will.' and I meant it with all my heart.'
Then she continued, 'And I am so glad that you
called, because I couldn't remember who had asked
me.'

The rabbi then tells Solly, 'Go home and let the
goat out. Come back in a week.'
Solly, now radiant, returns to the rabbi a week
later, exclaiming, 'Life is beautiful. We enjoy every
minute of it now that there's no goat; only the nine
of us.

Strawberry Shortcake Mother’s Day Social
Orchard Manor will be holding its annual
Mother’s Day Strawberry Shortcake Social on
Sunday, May 12th at 1:30 pm. Residents and their
guests will be served strawberry shortcake in
observance of their special day.
Fathers, don’t despair. We are having a Pie Social
for Father’s Day. It will be held June 16th. A warm welcome to Tammy Kerr, Social
Worker. She comes to us from Kittaning Care
Canter where she worked for 3 years. Prior to that,
Tammy worked in Clarion County as a Case
Manager for Mental Health. A graduate of
University of Pittsburgh, she completed a 9-month
internship with Children & Youth Services.
Tammy was born in Denver, CO on an Army
Base. The family moved around to different bases
until her father retired and they moved back to her
parents’ birthplace, here in Pennsylvania.
Tammy met her husband at a youth group
function and they have been married for 24 years.
The couple have two daughters, both of whom are
in college pursuing a nursing degree.
In addition to her three dogs, Tammy enjoys
hiking travelling and being outside. She loves to
laugh and joke.
Welcome Tammy!

I can notice the difference in
this time of season! We
celebrate the resurrection of
the Lord, and we see flowers
coming to life with beautiful
flowers on each plant, and blossoms in the trees, and
the songs of the birds calling the dawn of a new day.
I can remember the day our grandson Charlie was
born, and I think that one day Mary held Jesus for the
first time: but when I see Charlie and he climbs
everything, and grabs the steering wheel of a game
and pretends to be playing the game with his brother
Skylar, that Jesus was that age once. But I have a hard
time thinking that Mary would one day stand beneath
the cross of Calvary, watching her baby boy die, I
would hope I wouldn’t have to do that with Charlie.
The pain that must have ran through Mary that day
as she watched her Son die at the hands of sinful man.
But that was Friday and Sunday was coming. Jesus
told His disciples and His mother Mary that He would
suffer under the hands of the high priest and the
teachers of the Law, and on the third day He would
live again. Why were they so surprised when the tomb
was empty on resurrection Sunday? Because He lives,
and we have the hope of life eternal with Him in
heaven. Because He lives, we can face the sin issue in
our lives, and ask forgiveness from living our lives for
ourselves and not for God.
Chaplain’s Chatter New Life by Pastor Earl Dykes
Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:22-24, “Surely you
heard of Him and were taught in Him in
accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You
were taught, with regard to your former way of
life, to put off your old self, which is being
corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new
in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the
new self, created to be like God in true righteous-
ness and holiness.” Just as I watch our grandchildren grow and
being formed by what the hear and what they watch,
and read, I know we are all like that. Charlie sees a
dog and he calls it “cupcake”, because they have a
cat named “cupcake” at home, but as his mind
grows, he will know the difference between a cat
and a dog.
We have been given the Holy Spirit of God to
lead us, and we are commanded to “love one
another.” Jesus is the love of God given to this
world, and now we are to plant where we haven’t
planted before, and to sow where we haven’t
planted. New birth comes from each of us being
disciples for Jesus Christ, and today we are His feet,
hands and voice to this lost generation, who are
walking without the light of this world Jesus the
Christ, our resurrected Savior. Amen
Shalom to you,
Pastor Earl

For each thorn, there’s a rosebud
For each twilight — a dawn
For each trial — the strength to carry on,
For each storm cloud — a rainbow
For each shadow — the sun
For each parting — sweet memories
when sorrow is done.
