5-S Training

Target: The place, where you are working is: clean, tidy, healthy and secure .

5S is a 5 step action . The steps are 5 words starting with ‘S’

1.S Sort (Seiri)

Ask to yourself: What do I NOT NEED, to make my job PERFECT!

� Remove every object not needed from working place.

Everything what you do not need, should not be in the working place.

1.S Sort (Seiri)

RED TAG:

� By which parts should I use the RED TAG?: Set up a rule: “What will I not use in the next 1 week (1 month)?”will I not use in the next 1 week (1 month)?”� Raw Material in the production line.� Tools � Paperwork out of date� Tables, stools, locker, cabinet� Unidentified container, boxes� No more valid documents, signs, announcements, posters.� Put a RED TAG and store these items on a place, where everybody can see them. Wait for 1 week (month) if anybody needs these items.� After 1 week (month) throw them away.

2.S Set in Order (Seiton)

After the 1.S everything what remains has only 1 place, and this item is always in that p lace

and no where else!!!

If the item is not in the place, the place must show that the item is missing!

3.S Shine -Sweep (Seiso)

Cleaning Plan with at least 5 Main points:

� Areas to be cleaned / level of cleanliness

� Responsibilities

� How to clean - methods

� Get the equipment

� Follow up lists, check lists

3 Targets:

� All working areas are clean and shiny, that will make the

abnormalities visible.

� To check the first 2 S.

� Find and eliminate the root causes of dirt.

4.S Standardize (Seiketsu)

Make 5S a part of your daily life.

The aim of this ‘S’ is the maintain the new level in the production and have a

systematic approach to continuous improvement.systematic approach to continuous improvement.

4 step cycle:

� Plan: Who makes what when?

� Resources: Equipment & time

� Do: The first 3 ‘S’. In daily life.

� Check: follow up the results. Compare with old situation. Make a

continuous loop.

5.S Sustain / Self-Dicipline (Shitsuke)

Sustain: The most difficult point.If there is no continuous pressure from the management, there will be very soon no more 5 S in production.no more 5 S in production.Tools to make this step easy are:� Show the people the old-new stand in the factory. (Pictures, billboards)� Make regular 5S audits with check lists.� Show the results open to everybody .� Follow up the audit results. .
