OverviewThis year’s conference brings together professionals from diverse fields bringing information on wide-ranging topics relevant to quality patient centered care and critical nursing practice. The conference will cover this variety of topics via plenary and concurrent sessions, and poster sessions related to acute and critical care practice and trends in healthcare. We will have the opportunity to be inspired by the innovative and engaging presenters to continue our purposeful development of effective healthcare and to drive changes that matter for optimal patient and family outcomes.
Learning Outcomes• Understand how to use WHY as a tool to create a better future for health
care. • Understand the vulnerability of healthcare providers’ physical and
psychosocial well-being secondary to vicarious trauma. • Recognize clinical presentations and consequences of Alarm Fatigue.• Identify and evaluate benefits of interprofessional practice in medicine
and nursing teams. • Understand how exploring various creative strategies can provide room
for developing new procedures in surgery for better patient outcomes.• Understand the impact of animal assisted interventions on the social
and emotional well-being of patients.• Be better able to provide effective care to older patients. • Development of new knowledge and awareness of updates in the
diagnosis and treatment of heart failure.• Incorporate strategies to increase resilience in your healthcare
practice. • Understand the complexity of the disease of addiction and adapting
attitudes and interventions for effective treatment.
Call for Poster AbstractsWe are accepting applications for poster sessions to the 2018 Odyssey Conference! Poster abstract content must support interprofessional health topics in research, evidence-based practice, leadership, ethics, public policy and advanced practice. Deadline for receipt of Poster Session Application and Abstract is February 23, 2018. Any questions, please contact us at paul.swadley@vcuhealth.org.
HandoutsParticipants will receive an email prior to the event with instructions to access the conference materials.
Continuing EducationNursing: Up to 7.0 Contact Hours will be provided for full attendance at this conference, including interaction with poster presenters.
VCU Health is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Virginia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Registration InformationThe registration fee speaker handouts, continuing education credit, continental breakfast, break refreshments, and luncheon. Minimum and maximum numbers for attendance at this conference have been established, and we reserve the right to substitute speakers/topics, or cancel if necessary. Register early.
Cancellation PolicyFull refund, minus $15 processing fee for written cancellations postmarked by March 5, 2018. No refunds will be given for cancellations postmarked after this date.
ParkingYou can park at the Westin Hotel’s parking lot free of charge. Further information will be included with your confirmation letter.
AccommodationsArrangements have been made with the Westin Hotel to block overnight rooms for the Odyssey Conference. Participants can make their reservations by calling (888) 627-7786 and reference the “Virginia Commonwealth University Health System Authority” block to receive the discounted rate of $145/night for a Standard King room. Deadline for receiving the guest room block is Monday, February 19, 2018. This rate may not be available after this date.

Christine S. Schulman, MS, RN, CNS, CCRN-K, serves as president of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) board of directors from July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2018. Ms. Schulman is a critical care and trauma clinical nurse specialist at Legacy Health in Portland, Oregon. She was previously a trauma and critical care nursing consultant after working several years as a trauma and surgery clinical nurse specialist at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She obtained most of her bedside clinical experience as a staff nurse in the surgical ICU at Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, and earlier in her career she held critical care and emergency nursing positions in Wyoming and Colorado.
