2017-2018 WMS BYOD

BYOD: The Westfield Way

• Not a spray and pray technology initiative/program.• Years of planning and preparation.• 8th grade BYOD - since 2012• Site visits of several 1:1 technology schools.

• Take the good and learn from the not so good.• We will not fit square pegs in round holes.

• NOT doing BYOD just to say we are doing it.• BYOD and technology in general is a resource.• Technology, Internet lessons, etc will not replace

teachers/instruction.• Technology will enhance the great things our students and

teachers already do, WHEN APPROPRIATE AND WHEN IT CAN ENHANCE LEARNING.

Our Vision of BYOD• The best 1:1 “device” in the classroom has always been and always

will be a great teacher. • WWS believes BYOD is not a 1:1 initiative, but a One to World

initiative for our students. The focus is on innovative ways to teach and learn.

• Increase student engagement and facilitate a student centered classroom.

• Encourage digital citizenship and help students become more effective at using a variety of technological media as a means to expand the scope of the classroom. Learning can happen anytime and everywhere.

• Motivate students in owning their learning.• Incorporate 21st Century skills into the classroom more easily and

readily.• Provide ways to enhance students’ communication skills. • Access and use information creatively and collaboratively.

the direction of WWS.• Student use of technology

• WMS will implement building wide BYOD, with the ability to rent a Chromebook from WWS for yearly rental fee.• We anticipate the rental fee to be competitive with other districts in

Hamilton County.• We have worked very hard to reduce student fees on TBR to help

offset the rental fee.• All students will be required to have a device.• We ARE ready!

• Teachers have undergone extensive training over the past two years on Canvas, Google Apps for Education, and the instructional model, SAMR.

• “Digi-Camp” in August• Canvas & Google training• Rules, expectations, digital citizenship, online safety, cyberbullying,

Canvas, Google, etc will be covered.

• WWS admin, WMS admin, and WMS teachers have been sampling different Chromebook devices to find the most cost effective, user friendly, durable, and best device for student use.

• Through this process we have identified a Dell touchscreen Chromebook as our best option.

Chromebook Rental Payment• Rental costs

• $88.00 per year* - due at the WMS Open House in August. TBR bills are sent in September and due in November. Our goal is to spread out the cost of this increased financial burden.

• Price ultimately depends on the quote we receive at the time of order. We hope the rental charge will be under $88/year.

• Buyout option: $316.00*-Most recent quote from Dell• Buyout after year 1 or year 2 - The price of the Chromebook

minus what has already been paid in rental fees.• After 4 years of rental or buyout, the Chromebook is

yours. We will not collect and send to auction. We are not in this to make money.

Internet Safety• Westfield Washington School employs an Internet filter to protect

student from material that can be potentially dangerous to minors on the Internet. • Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) Compliant• Requirement of all public schools.

• Students are in violation of WWS policy if they bypass the Internet filter.

• WWS and WMS holds the academic expectation that students will visit only those sites related to their coursework.

• Student users should assume that none of their work is private and confidential while using the school network. In the interest of maintaining a safe and secure learning environment communication and data may be subject to review.

• 1:1 technology takes more classroom management and home management (monitoring).

• Rented Chromebook devices will be filtered, even when away from the district!

FAQ’s• What if my child’s device is damaged, lost, or stolen?

• WWS, nor its staff is liable for any device stolen, lost, or damaged on school property. If a device is stolen or damaged, it will be handled through the administrative office in the same manner as other personal items that are impacted in similar situations.

• If a device is broken, lost or stolen it will take time to replace, would that put kids behind?• No, we will work with the student to ensure they are not behind or

penalized in any way. If the device is rented from WWS they may check out a loaner device from the Media Center.

• Will all textbooks be online and will textbook fees be reduced?• Yes and No. We have online access to most of our textbooks. A list of

access codes are available on our website. Students will not be exempt textbook rental fees due to Indiana Law. The State of Indiana is one of only 8 states in the US that does not fund textbook rental. We are working diligently to reduce other student fees and will explore creating our own textbooks when our current textbook agreements expire in the coming years.

FAQ’s

• Will teachers be teaching or will this be online learning?• We view technology as a tool to enhance instruction and nothing more.

Technology will not replace the student/teacher relationship. Our teachers will provide direct instruction, but now have the flexibility to become facilitators when appropriate.

• Can I change my mind mid-year and send my child to school with a BYOD device?

• You can, but there will be no refunds given for the rental fee. $88 is for the entire school year.

• Can I rent one year and BYOD the next or vice versa? • Yes! Choosing now to rent or BYOD does not lock you into the same

situation the next year or in future years. • What if I indicate now that my child will BYOD, but over the summer I

change my mind and want to rent a Chromebook?• We will accommodate this request as much as we possibly can. We

ask that you let us know as soon as possible. There is lag time between ordering and receiving a Chromebook.
