Federal Open Data Requirements

• Open data executive order (2013): Orders that open

and machine readable data be the new default for

government information

• DATA Act: Digital Accountability and Transparency Act

(2014)

– Common standards for financial data provided by all government

agencies

– Expands the amount of data that agencies must provide to the

government website, USASpending.

– Goal of the law is to improve the ability of Americans to track and

understand how the government is spending their tax dollars.

HHS Open Data Requirements

• HHS Open Government Plan: HHS currently implementing version 3 of Open Government Plan.
