the league began in 1946-47. Augustana is currently sixth in the nation

Augustana grants baccalaureate degrees in more than 60 areas of study.

Along with a competitive athletic environment, student-athletes can join

one or several of the school’s 150 student organizations or take advan-

Augustana has a student-faculty ratio of 11:1, and nearly 90 percent of

the faculty hold the Ph.D. or the terminal degree in their fi eld.

The following mission statement guides Augustana’s liberal arts curriculum

and student programs.

Augustana College, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and a

Lutheran expression of the Christian faith, is committed to offer-

2015 PROSPECTUS

Vikings ready to continue success after win-ning fi rst CCIW title since 1974

also know that pitching and defense will be the key to having any success again this season. We think our pitching is solid but we do have to replace three very key players in the fi eld in Jacob Van Duyne, Grant Stewart and Nick Tenerelli.”Van Duyne, a center fi elder, was the leadoff batter for the past four years and fi nished his career in the top 10 in four offensive categories. Stewart was an NCAA Division III All-American at fi rst base and was the CCIW’s “Player of the Year” a year ago. Tenerelli started 39 games at catcher and was all-region and all-conference.

“We have some guys that are going to have to step up,” said Wallace. “It will be tough to replace Van Duyne, Stewart and Tenerelli but we have plenty of capable candidates.”

The pitching staff might be the strong point of the team with three all-conference performers back to lead the way. Senior Seth Davis (J.K. Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) and juniors Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) and Zach Morgenstern (Peoria Notre Dame HS, East Peoria, Ill.) were all named to the all-CCIW team in 2014. Davis, who was an NCAA Division III All-American in 2013 as a sophomore, went 5-2 last year with a 3.45 earned run average. White was 6-1 with a 2.86 ERA and Morgenstern was 5-1 with a 2.01 ERA and was second on the staff in appearances with 14. Junior Chris Sauer (Rock Canyon HS, Littleton, Colo.) posted a 6-2 record with a 3.82 ERA and sophomore Kyle McGinley (J.K. Mullen HS, Denver, Colo.) was 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA. Those fi ve will be contenders for the starting rotation.

Sophomore Cooper SantAmour (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) led the Vikings in appearances with 15 and he heads up a bullpen that includes senior Kevin Hodgeman (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and juniors Darwin Townsend (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and Jamie Rammel (McHenry HS, McHenry, Ill.).

The catching position will be up for grabs as a replacement for Tenerelli needs to be found. Junior John Swiderski (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) and sophomore Mitchell Ruh (Hinckley-Big Rock HS, Big Rock, Ill.) are the front runners.

In the infi eld senior Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) returns at third base where he batted .356 with 53 hits in 149 at-bats last year while scoring nine runs and driving in 23. He was a second team all-con-ference selection and a third team all-region pick. Junior Alex Fluehr (Har-lem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) took over the shortstop position after the second trip to Florida and he batted .282 with 29 hits in 103 at-bats while starting 30 games. Junior Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) started 40 of 41 games at second base and hit .309 with 46 hits in 149 at-bats while scoring 32 runs and driving in 20. He also had 10 doubles.

Seniors Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) and Brandon Jasper (Central DeWitt HS, DeWitt, Iowa) are back after holding down left and right fi eld respectively a year ago. Fifer was the leading hitter on the team with a .442 average with 72 hits in 163 at-bats while scoring 37 runs and knocking in 50. He was fi rst team all-conference and all-region in 2014. Jasper hit .309 with 46 hits in 149 at-bats. He was second on the team in runs scored with 47 and second in stolen bases with nine. Junior Jeff Prior (Rock Canyon HS, Lone Tree, Colo.) and freshman John Sagen (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) will contend for the open outfi eld position.

Senior Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) batted .374 with 34 hits in 91 at-bats as the designated hitter last year.

One year ago the Augustana baseball team made history when it won the College Conference of Illinois title for the fi rst time in 40 years with a 15-6 record in league play. The Vikings fi nished the season with a 29-12 overall mark and just missing the NCAA Division III national tournament for the fi fth time in school history.

Veteran head coach Greg Wallace is entering his 18th season as the head coach at his alma mater and he is on the cusp of winning his 500th game at the Viking helm. He has compiled a record of 497-229 (.685) in his previous 17 seasons at Augustana and his overall coaching record is 575-278-1 while includes a four year stint at Frostburg State where his teams went 78-49-1. The Vikings won the CCIW tournament in 1999 and again in 2013 and were in the NCAA Division III national tournament in 1999, 2007, 2008 and 2013.

Augustana has won at least 25 games in 15 of the last 16 seasons and eight times since 1999 the Vikings have eclipsed the 30-victory mark.

Last year Wallace’s team was extremely consistent in league play, jumping out to a 7-2 record after the fi rst nine games and then winning eight of their last 10. The conference title was clinched on the fi nal weekend of the 2014 season with a three game sweep of Millikin at home in Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The fi nal game was a 12-2 win over Big Blue after victories by scores of 5-4 and 16-6 in the fi rst two games of the series.

Heading into the 2015 season, Wallace is optimistic thanks to 22 returning letter winners, including six starting position players and three starting pitchers.

“We have a number of returning players from last year’s CCIW champion-ship team,” said Wallace. “We will rely on those returning players and we

Senior Grant Stweart looks to continue the dominance he displayed last year. Stewart was an NCAA Division III All-American at fi rst base and was the CCIW “Player of the Year”.

HEAD COACH GREG WALLACE

Greg Wallace enters his 18th sea-son as the head baseball coach at his alma mater and it has been an era of unprecedented success. Since assuming the reigns of the Vikings prior to the 1997-98 school year, he has guided the Vikings to two school record seasons in terms of victories and 14 of the top 15 single season win totals in Augustana history. In seven of his 15 years, Augus-tana has won at least 30 games, including four in a row from 2005 through 2008.

In his very fi rst year he took the Vikings to a 22-16 record, the second highest victory total in school history at the time, trailing only the then-existing school mark of 25 wins compiled in 1996. He eclipsed that record in 1999 when he led Augustana to a sterling 32-13 season. Included among those 32 wins was the fi rst College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin baseball tournament championship in school history and fi rst ever NCAA Division III tournament appear-ance. In 2000 the Blue & Gold went 38-8, establishing a new school record and were an impressive 17-4 in CCIW play. The 2001 season saw the Vikings fi nish with a 30-14 record and place second in the CCIW and in 2002 Augusta-na went 25-16 and fi nished third in the CCIW. The Vikings compiled a mark of 28-15 and placed third in the confer-ence in 2003 and established seven new school records. In 2004 Wallace’s crew went 25-15 overall and 10-11 in the conference and in 2005 Augustana was 33-11 overall and 15-6 in the CCIW. The 2006 campaign fi nished with a 31-10 overall record and a 15-6 record in conference action.

In a two year span from 2007 through 2008 the Vikings had a combined record of 69-27 and have qualifi ed for the NCAA Division III national tournament each season. In 2007 they were 35-14, the second highest win total in school history and second place fi nishes in both the CCIW and NCAA Regional tournaments. His team set 10 new school records during the year. The 2008 team went 34-13, the third highest victory total in Augustana history and was third in both the conference and regional tournament. In 2009 the Vikings went 23-17 and in 2010 the Vikings went 25-15 overall. The 2011 version of the Vikings compiled a 28-12 overall record. In 2012, Augustana posted a 25-17 record to secure a 15th straight year over the 20 win pla-teau. The 2012 season was a milestone year for Wallace as he recorded his 500th overall win as a head coach.

In just 15 years Wallace has a record of 468-217 (.683) at Augustana and his overall collegiate record is 546-266 (.672). He currently ranks 25th in NCAA Division III in terms of winning percentage among active coaches with at least fi ve years experience and 32nd in victories among active coaches. He was also the CCIW “Coach of the Year” in 2005.

Wallace, who grew up in Belvidere, Illinois and was a three sport (football – basketball – baseball) star at Belvidere High School before graduating in 1984, was outstanding in both baseball and football during his undergraduate days at Augustana. He was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Vikings and served as team captain as a senior during the 1987 season. During his football career he led Augus-tana to NCAA Division III titles in 1985 and 1986 and the Vikings won three straight CCIW championships under his control. As a baseball player he was a four-time letterwin-ner and a four-year starter at second base and center fi eld and was named to the All-conference team in 1986 and 1987.

Wallace graduated from Augustana in the spring of 1988 with a degree in business with concentrations in marketing and management. After serving as the head baseball coach at Rock Valley Community College for one year in 1989, he moved on to graduate school at Frostburg State University in Maryland. At Frostburg he served as both an assistant football and baseball coach while he earned his Master’s Degree in education. He later became the defensive backs

coach for the Bobcat football team before being named head baseball coach in 1992. During his four year tenure (1992-95) as head baseball coach at Frostburg State, Wal-lace compiled a record of 78-49-1. In his fi rst year his Bob-cat team won the Eastern States Athletic Conference and Wallace was named the ESAC ‘Coach of the Year’. While under the direction of Wallace, Frostburg State qualifi ed for the ECAC (East Coast Athletic Conference) playoffs three times.

In the summer of 1995 Wallace came back to Augustana and quickly moved up the chain of command. In 1995 he assumed the duties of assistant football and assistant baseball coach, in 1996 he became the offensive coordi-nator for the Vikings football team, in 1997 he became the head baseball coach, and fi nally in 1998 he was named the men’s athletic director, replacing John Farwell, who retired after 16 years at the position. He held that position until the spring of 2004. Wallace and his wife Rona currently live in Rock Island, Illinois with their two sons Cayton and Trenton.

DUANE R. SWANSON STADIUM - BRUNNER FIELD

After being the proverbial baseball nomads for nearly 40 years, the Augustana Vikings baseball team fi nally found a home. For years Augustana jumped around the Quad Cities, playing home games at a number of different locations. In the summer of 2003 construc-tion began on a new complex at 43rd Avenue in Moline with plans for the fi eld to be ready for the fi rst home game of the 2004 season. It was completed on time and on March 20, 2004 Duane R. Swanson Stadi-um/Brunner Field saw its fi rst action when the Fight-ing Scots of Monmouth College and the Augustana Vikings matched up for a Saturday doubleheader. The Vikings and the Fighting Scots each claimed victory on that day with Augustana winning by a score of 13-5 and Monmouth winning 4-2. Augustana fi nished that 2004 season with a 15-4 home record. The Vikings are 104-41 overall at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field and 61-30 in conference play.YEAR OVERALL OVERALL CCIW CCIW 2004 15-4 .789 9-2 .8182005 11-5 .688 6-4 .6002006 17-2 .895 10-1 .9092007 11-5 .688 5-5 .5002008 17-7 .708 9-5 .6432009 11-6 .647 9-4 .6922010 9-8 .530 5-6 .4552011 13-4 .765 8-3 .7272012 7-10 .412 4-7 .3642013 15-3 .833 9-2 .8182014 14-4 .777 9-2 .818TOTAL 140-58 .707 83-41 .669

2014 BASEBALL REVIEW

Augustana claims 2014 CCIW championship; fi nishes 29-12 overall; Grant Stewart named conference Player of the Year & 3rd team All-America; Greg Wallace named CCIW Coach of the Year; eight Vikings earn all-conference recognition and seven garner all-region honorsIts fi rst College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship in 40 years highlighted the 2014 season for Coach Greg Wallace’s Augustana baseball program. The Vikings fi nished 29-12 overall and 15-6 in the CCIW, with Wallace earning his second conference Coach of the Year award and senior fi rst baseman Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) garnering league Player of the Year honors. In addition, Stewart was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America third team and was one of seven Vikings to earn all-region recognition and one of eight named all-conference.

After winning eight of 12 games in Florida to open the season, Augustana began its run to the CCIW title by taking two of three games from Whea-ton. A doubleheader split with North Central at home left the team at 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the league, but the Vikings swept three from Elmhurst and fi nished the North Central series with a mid-week win to improve to 15-6 and 7-2 heading into a series with league-leading Illinois Wesleyan.

A doubleheader setback in Bloomington, Illinois dropped Wallace’s club three games off the pace, but after rain postponed the series fi nale two days, the Vikings began their recovery with an 11-8 win over the Titans at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. Augustana defeated Knox 9-2 the same night in a rare two-opponent twin bill and fi nished the regular season by winning 13 of its fi nal 15 games, including eight of 10 in the CCIW. The Vikings took two of three each from North Park and Carthage and swept three from Millikin on the fi nal weekend to clinch the conference champi-onship.

Hosting the CCIW tournament, top seed Augustana opened with a 6-3 win over fourth-seeded North Central on Thursday, May 8, but fell to Illinois Wesleyan (12-4) and North Central (8-4) on Friday to end its season.

Stewart hit .415 this year with team highs of three home runs and 57 RBI. His RBI total was eighth in the nation and fourth-best in Augustana history, just three shy of the school record. The senior fi rst baseman also led the Vikings with 17 doubles—tied for third-most in program history—96 total bases, a .585 slugging percentage and eight hit-by-pitches. Stewart led the CCIW with 29 RBI in 21 league games and tied for the conference lead with nine doubles.

Joining Stewart on the All-CCIW fi rst team were junior left fi elder junior left fi elder Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.), senior center fi elder Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.), junior catcher Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and sopho-more pitcher Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.). Junior third baseman Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) and pitchers Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.), a junior left-hander, and Zach Morgen-stern (Peoria Notre Dame HS, East Peoria, Ill.), a sophomore right-hander, were second team All-CCIW picks.

Fifer and Van Duyne shared the CCIW lead with 37 hits each. Fifer was also the conference batting champion (.425) and led the Vikings with a .442 average this year—15th in the nation and sixth-best in school history. He had one home run and 50 RBI and also led the team with 72 hits and a .492 on-base percentage. Van Duyne not only tied for the CCIW lead in hits, but also in runs (27) with teammate Brandon Jasper (Central HS, DeWitt, Iowa) (.309-0-16, 47 runs scored, nine steals). Van Duyne fi nished the year with a .382 average, one home run, 24 RBI and team highs of 186 at-bats, 55 runs, three triples and 12 stolen bases. Fifer earned fi rst team all-region honors from both ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com. Van Duyne was a second and third team all-region pick, respectively, from those organizations.

Tenerelli hit .356 with one homer and 31 RBI. He led the Vikings with six sacrifi ce fl ies, tied for the team lead with 19 walks and tied for the CCIW lead by throwing out eight would-be base stealers in league play. He was a second team all-region selection by D3baseball. White fi nished the year 6-1 with one save and a team-best 2.86 ERA. He tied classmate Chris Sauer (Rock Canyon HS, Littleton, Colo.) *The top four teams, by CCIW winning percentage, qualify for the CCIW baseball tournament. The four qualifying teams receive one championship point for each regular season CCIW baseball victory and additional championship points based on the following tournament records: 3-0 = 5 points; 4-1 or 3-1 = 4 points; 3-2 = 3 points; 2-2 = 2 points; 1-2 = 1 point and 0-2 = 0 points. Teams that do not qualify for the tournament do not receive champi-onship points for regular season victories. If a tie occurs in total points after the tournament, then the team that fi nished highest in the tournament will be the conference champion. The CCIW champion receives the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III baseball tournament.

ALL TIME SERIES RECORDS

2015 BASEBALL- 23

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSINNow in its 69th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois.

Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Car-thage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955.

As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW membership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined offi cially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew.

Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the fi rst time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the fi rst ever women’s competition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Cen-tral in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College.

The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanc-tions 21 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & fi eld, men’s and women’s outdoor track & fi eld, volleyball and wrestling.

Augustana also sports varsity men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. Neither women’s nor men’s lacrosse is currently a CCIW sport.

Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 179 total. Of those 179, the men have won 139 and 40 belong to the women.

Baseball has been a conference sports since the beginning with the CCIW crowning its fi rst champion (Millikin) in the 1946-47 school year. Augustana has four CCIW titles in baseball (1952, 1965, 1968, 1974), two CCIW South Division championships (1989, 1996) and one CCIW tournament crown (1999).
