WIDENER PRIDE 7 – 4
2006 SOUTHWEST BOWL CHAMPIONS
WIDENER 3 - 4 DEFENSE
PHILOSOPHY
The foundation of our 3 - 4 Defense is built upon the characteristicsof Simplicity, Accountability, Toughness and Commitment.
Simplicity is necessary in order to get our players to play aggressivelyand react to the football. Confidence comes through consistency, repetitions and understanding.
Accountability is demanded from our coaches down to our players. We are all in this together as a team. There is no place for individuals.Everyone must execute their own assignments in order for us to be asuccessful defensive team.
Toughness can be broken down in to Physical and Mental.Physical Toughness can be defined as hitting our opponent as hard as wecan on each and every play while pursuing relentlessly to the football.Mental Toughness can be defined as executing our assignment andresponsibility under all adverse circumstances and playing conditions.
Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is thewords that speak boldly of your intentions and your actions will speak louder than your words. A Defensive player’s commitmentto his teammates can be measured by his distance from the ball atthe end of each play.
Widener’s Defense is a multiple 3-4 Defense. Various alignmentsand movements will give us our multiplicity out of our base personnel. We will also have multiple coverage's that are closely tied in with eachfront.
1. Regular Personnel:
a. Angle Front – a head-up, post snap movement front that we can move in different directions based on the huddle call.
b. Shade Front – slight alignment variations with our front in order to change our opponent’s blocking schemes. Our shade fronts arealso post snap movements that help us defend different gaps and ultimately protect our linebackers.
c. Zone Pressure – using various fronts and stunts, we will play a 3 deep – 3 under or a 2 deep – 4 under zone coverage.
2. Pass Coverage Personnel:
a. Nickel – we will utilize this front and personnel exclusively as a pass defense. We will place our best 3 or 4 pass rushers on the field along with our best 7 or 8 cover people.
b. Dime – we will utilize the 5th and 6th defensive back to replacea linebacker.
WIDENER 3 - 4 DEFENSE
Communication is very important in our 3-4 Defensive System. We are constantly communicating throughout the defense.
We are a No Huddle defense that is constantly communicating up tothe snap of the football.
THE LINE OF COMMUNICATION
Corner – to the side of the opponent is looking for personnel groupingsFS – makes the coverage callsMike – makes the front and stunt callsNose – calls out the down and distanceSam, Hawk – looking for TE’sSS / Will – calls out top plays and formations based on personnelEnds – looking to see if OL is changing sides
We start each play with a “Strength” call. The MIKE Linebacker will make the “Strength” call as soon as the offense breaks the huddle. The entire Defensive Unit will get aligned and base their calls on this “Strength” call.
STRENGTH CALL RULES:
1. Single TE set – strength is always determined where that TE lines up. If he were to “Trade”, then the strength would also change.
2. Two TE set – strength is determined two ways: a. Balance set – Field or QB’s passing arm determines strength. b. Multiple WR set – multiple WR side determines strength.
3. No TE set – strength is determined two ways: a. Balance set – Field or QB’s passing arm determines strength. b. Multiple WR set – multiple WR side determines strength.

Positions and Alignments Pre-Snap:
PIONEER DEFENSIVE CHECK LIST:1. Good defenses control the run; Great defenses stop the run.2. It takes zero athletic ability to run all out to the football.3. Good teams find a way to hold on to a lead; Great teams build leads with
the help of their defense and special teams.4. Create a scheme/system that will utilize your best players in as many one-on-one
situations as possible.5. Sometimes “simpler” is better.6. Create competition. Reward success and correct failure.7. Make sure everyone is treated the same – from the All-American to the 5 th string.8. Practices must be up-tempo at all times.9. Set goals – believe and achieve! Everyone wants to win, but how bad do you
hate to lose.10. Build your defense with speed and great tacklers.
PIONEER DEFENSIVE ASSETS:1. Eyes2. Hands3. Feet4. Ears5. Voice
DEFENSIVE STAFF GOALS:1. Make the players the very best they can be.2. Play as many players as we can.3. Get your players to know as much about an opponent as you do.4. Put your players in as many split second decision making situations during the
week as you can.5. Be the most productive unit on the field at your position.6. Be a competitor – Find a way to Win!7. Develop and maintain attitude – stay together at all times.8. Accountability / Responsibility / Focus / Concentration.9. Set the tone and lead by example.10. Be Productive – make Big Plays!
