THESE ladies are lookingfor more than a cheekynibble on the earlobe. If blood-thirsty bikini babesare your idea of a great Fridaynight in, look no further.Waking up after a heavy ses-sion on the lash, you play asone of a group of foursurvivors of a zombie apoca-lypse. With the undead look-ing to have a taste of yourflesh, hand-to-hand combat isyour primary means of seeingoff the hordes and you’ll haveto use axes and shanks tosurvive the outbreak, whilelevelling up toearn new abili-ties.If melee isn’tyour thing, youcan choose char-acters based ontheir unique skillsets, includingproficiency inguns and knives.Just like GrandTheft Auto, DeadIsland allows youto pick andchoose missionsor head off aloneon a massacre.Exploring the

island is a real gem, espe-cially when you walk in on aroom converted into a sexyamateur film studio. Oo-er.You’ll want to get a groupof mates together to make themost of Dead Island, as playingwith friends ramps up the fun. When you’re not hacking offundead human parts, most ofyour time is spent ferryinggoods between survivor groups— and that’s the biggest prob-lem Dead Island faces. The repetitive nature of thefetch quests will turn some

off, while laterareas of theisland — townand jungle —aren’t a patch onthe opening resort. It’s Borderlandsand Left 4 Deadrolled into onebut isn’t as goodas either of them. The awesomeconcept and greatatmosphere makeit one of the bet-ter ideas for azombie game, butDead Island maybe a chore. LW

WARHAMMER, for the unac-quainted, is the geeky fadwherein you collect models ofmake-believe space warriorsand, er, paint them. The collectors would then

take their “armies” to a GamesWorkshop store and battle itout . . . by throwing a dice.Somehow, Warhammer has

spawned all kinds of break-outs, including a successful

video game series.Described as intense action

RPG, it is the bringing to life ofGames Workshop. But, slight mockery aside,

this is actually a decent game.As with its predecessor, Kill

Team, there are lots of posi-tives. Gameplay is very good, the plot enjoyable and theaction is, as promised, intense. You control one of the War-

hammer forces – the onlyremaining good guys in the dis-tant future — to save humanityfrom violent extinction. And therest is history in the making.A guilty secret of geeky fun.

THE STAGGER RATSWHO: Daniel Paylor (vocals/guitar), CallumEaster (vocals organ), Craig Mcmullen(guitar), Kai Wallace (drums), Jack Sandi-son (bass/vocals)WHERE: EdinburghFOR FANS OF: The Libertines, ArcticMonkeys, The WaterboysJIM SAYS: My first introduction to TheStagger Rats was when their single, SeeThrough Spiders, featured in the DannyDyer movie Pimp. Mark Kermode describedthe film as “leery, laddy, dreary nonsense”.My thoughts on the single were little better.Oh how I’d like to backtrack now, though I

still maintain it is one of the band’s weakertracks. It’s certainly been some ride for the boys

so far, from being set up in rundown Glas-gow digs before a management deal wentsour to finding themselves recording theirdebut album, Scorpio Leisure, with legend-ary Britpop producer Owen Morris.Responsible for key releases from heavy-

hitters Oasis and The Verve, as well as TheView, Owen told me The Stagger Rats arethe best band he’s worked with!Attitude, coupled with some great songs

and the contrasting vocal styles of Danieland Callum make The Stagger Rats seriouscontenders. Watch them go!MORE: facebook.com/thestaggerratsQ Jim’ll be playing The Stagger Rats onIn:Demand Uncut — Sunday 7-10pm onClyde 1, Forth One, Northsound 1, RadioBorders, Tay FM, West FM & West SoundFM.
