Syllabus

• Syllabus

Safety TrainingIf you do not get confirmation that you have completed the online training, then you must contact the office of compliance. Your GTA is unable to access those records or make any changes.

Typical lab day:

• You will show up on time and a quiz will be administered: up to ½ new material...so read ahead! If you are late, you do not get to take the quiz

• We will highlight key concepts and go over how the experiment will be performed

• Perform the experiment(s) and keep a record of your results

IntroLabs Website

• http://biology.uta.edu/introlabs/• Posting of the syllabus, announcements,

supplemental materials, etc...• Check announcements often....if there is

supplemental material for the lab, print it off and bring it with you to lab.

Laboratory 1:

• Lab Safety• The Scientific Method• The Metric System

• Lab Manual pages 1-20

Lab Safety

• Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

• Blood-Borne Pathogens– If there is an accident, do not help one another

clean up blood

• No Horseplay• Use Common Sense

The Scientific Method

• Critical method of evaluating observations in science

1.Make an observation and construct a related question.

2.Formulate a hypothesis and make a prediction.

3.Design and perform experiments4.Conclusion

The Scientific Method

• Experiments:– Independent variable: is manipulated– Dependant variable: is measured– Controlled variable: kept constant

– Experimental group: contains the manipulated organisms

– Control group: contains the organisms that are held constant

The Metric System

• The system of measurement universally used by scientists.

• Base 10 system of measurement.• Basic units: mass = grams, volume = Liters,

length = meters• Consult page 2 of your lab manual for specific

conversions

Dimensional Analysis

Always show your units and cancel them as you do your conversions this will eliminate careless mistakes.

Assignment

• Download Web Assignment 1 and complete it. Turn it in at the beginning of class next week.

• Make sure you purchase the lab manual• Complete your online safety training...you can

be dropped from the class if you do not.

Use 3 Significant digits in the lab today.

Weigh your pecans first!

Densities should be less than one.

Bring your data back with you next week along with your completed web assignment 1.

Buy your lab manuals.
