1. 1 Jn. 5:1-5 God defeats all sin by the gospel

1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

1 Jn. 4:9-10 Perfect sacrifice for our sins: reflects the horror of sin & the love of God

9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Jn. 3:3-5 Each step of new birth reverses the deadly effects of sin

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 8:22-24 Each step of restoration reverses the deadly effects of sin: repent, confess, pray

22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. 23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24 Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me.

13

II. Greater Faith in God A. Sin Is Unbelief in Action, Obedience Is Faith

Num. 20:12 Moses & Aaron guilty of unbelief 12 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron,

Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them.

14

II. Greater Faith in God A. Sin Is Unbelief in Action, Obedience Is Faith

Heb. 11:8 By faith Abraham obeyed

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

15

II. Greater Faith in God A. Sin Is Unbelief in Action, Obedience Is Faith

Exercise obedient faith: yield our will to God= self-discipline, self-denial

18

II. Greater Faith in God B. Trust God to Lead Us to a New Life

Ps. 57:1 Trust Him till the calamity passes

1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

19

II. Greater Faith in God B. Trust God to Lead Us to a New Life

Ps. 51:17 True change of heart includes commitment to live a new life

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

20

III. Resist, Fight Temptations A. Determine to Battle with God’s Help— Trust Him to Give Victory

1 Cor. 10:13 He opens ways of escape

1 Cor. 10:13 He opens ways of escape

13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

22

III. Resist, Fight Temptations A. Determine to Battle with God’s Help— Trust Him to Give Victory

Ja. 4:6-10 God helps us if we resist Satan

Ja. 4:6-10 God helps us if we resist Satan 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. 9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

24

III. Resist, Fight Temptations B. Focus on Specific Dangers

Gal. 5:19-21 Know your weaknesses: sexual, religious, attitudes, lack restraint, etc.

Gal. 5:19-21 Know your weaknesses: sexual, religious, attitudes, lack restraint, etc.

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Sexual Sins

False Religion

III. Resist, Fight Temptations C. The Tongue Is a Vital Battleground

Ja. 3:10-11 Temper & tongue reveal the heart

10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

IV. Seek Good Counsel A. Seek Counsel from the Wise Not Fools

Prov. 24:6 We are at war with sin!

IV. Seek Good Counsel B. Seek Counsel from Christians Not Sinners

Rom. 12:2 Be transformed not conformed

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

29

IV. Seek Good Counsel C. Seek Counsel from the Mature Not Immature

Heb. 5:13-14 Mature in Scripture & life 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
