Both Italy and Germany used military force to unify parts of their territories

What is a similarity in their unification?

Russia, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman. It was difficult to be a multi-national empire at this time

because nationalism was a popular force and people wanted to have their own political state.

They then began to revolt to get their independence.

What were the three multi-ethnic empires and why was it difficult to be a multi-ethnic empire?

The Portuguese royal family fled to its colony, Brazil, when Napoleon took over Portugal. They lived among the Brazilians for a long time. When

other South American countries got their independence, the Brazilians asked the

Portuguese for it and got it. They did not have to fight.

How was Brazil’s independence movement different from the rest of South America’s?

The creoles had the most access to power. They were influenced by the Enlightenment ideas in

Europe because they studied there. They felt no allegiance to the powers in Europe.

Why were the creoles the ones who led independence movements in Latin America?

Nationalism still makes some ethnic groups want their own country. i.e. Chechens in the Caucasus, Tamil Tigers in Sri

Lanka, Irish Republican Army
