~ CLOSE READING CONNECTIONS ~
What do we already know about Close Reading?
Krumpe/Shared Inquiry
~ CLOSE READING CONNECTIONS ~
Close Reading is the careful, sustained analysis of text with sufficient complexity
JGB 2nd reading directly examines challenging text passages by encouraging students to REread with a purpose…
Teacher’s Manual The combination of JGB and Close Reading
empowers students to understand the central ideas and key supporting details to arrive at a new understanding of the text as a whole

~ WHAT IS SHARED INQUIRY DISCUSSION? ~
A JGB trade-marked text based discussion format that provides students with an opportunity to closely examine the text, ask questions, share their reactions, and discover new insights with fellow readers
Text selections are read aloud prior to Shared Inquiry discussion, so that students of all levels can engage in higher-order thinking, close reading, and collaborative problem solving
Through the use of text based, Interpretive questions students are able to analyze challenging passages that require them to provide text based evidence to support their thoughts

~ SHARED INQUIRY… SOCRATIC SEMINAR STYLE ~
Socratic Seminar is a discussion format that engages students to come to a deeper understanding of the text. One format of a Socratic Seminar uses an Inner and Outer circle method which is especially effective for larger groups.
The Inner Circle participants discuss the text at hand The Outer Circle participants observe discussion and
can note interesting ideas, provide feedback, ask questions, join the
HOT SEAT, etc.

~ SHARED INQUIRY LEADER ROLE ~ Reference the 2 Interpretive questions from the JGB Teacher’s
Manual and note supporting text passages. Interpretive questions have more than one right answer and can be supported with evidence from the text.
Consider additional follow-up questions that will extend the discussion of the Interpretive questions. I use student JGB Close Reading Bookmarks for ideas.
Use a Seating Chart to capture discussion ideas and promote equity among participants. Encourage students to speak directly to each other, return to the text frequently, and consider all ideas presented.
