AN APPRECIABLE INITIATIVE TOWARDS INNOVATIVE THINKING BY GTU: Managing projects in

effective ways is important for all industries and is also the main focus of a number of academic initiatives. The

Project Canvas is a convenient tool for communicating within the project team, for decision making, and is thereby

also a way of managing progress in the appropriate manner. Unforeseen obstacles are always a part of the project

management process, and they can affect resources, time and quality. Therefore, the success of a project is closely

linked to the team’s ability to plan, adjust and react to changing circumstances. Project Canvas is created in order

to help all members of a team obtain a clear overview of a project.

Considering all of the above points & for the ease and better understanding of the activities and challenges while

doing the project, initiative was taken by Mr. Kushal Patel, EC Department, to arrange such activity and students

have made three canvas in the first phase of their project, namely; Observation Matrix, Ideation Canvas &Product

Canvas.

(1) OBSERVATION MATRIX CANVAS: Date:-29/09/2014

When defining the project scope, the team explores the immediate project activities, milestones and end results.

They are placed either inside or outside of the project’s scope. The elements should be revised until a satisfactory

scope has been created. To make the best use of scope as a project guideline, all stakeholders should commonly

agree upon and authorize the defined scope before initiating the project. All these activities and their summary were

jotted down by all the students in their canvas using sticky notes. They had funneled out a single scope and limitation

that will be overcome by their projects. This canvas formed the base of their project and directed their work flow.

The first schematic below shows a typical layout of an observation matrix.

(2) IDEATION CANVAS: Date:-29/09/2014

Decision points: for selecting sets of actions and transition to a new phase.

Coordination points: where work on several fields must be completed at a certain point in time.

Approval: both internal and external.

Liability transfers: to or from the project team.

All these points were covered in this canvas it focused on the people being influenced by the project, Activities to

be done to achieve the milestones.

“What is the best way to describe the necessary actions?

Does each action have a direct link to one or more of the outcomes?

Are the actions detailed enough to develop a project plan?” all these questions were answered by various teams in

their ideation canvas in props/possible solutions.

Schematic shows the typical ideation canvas sample. Both these canvas were completed on 29th by the students

successfully following the GTU norms.

(3) PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT CANVAS: Date:-30/09/2014

Purpose: The reason the project is carried out and the intentions of the project owner. The outcome captures what

the project should lead towards. The other elements in the canvas should support and contribute to attaining the

result. The result can be seen as a unifying intention throughout the project process. “What do we want to deliver

to obtain the purpose? Who are the targeted users of the project? Who will benefit from the outcome of the project?

Are there people in the project team who also represent the users?” All these questions were raised and resolved by

the students in the product canvas. Schematic shows a particular product canvas. This activity was carried out on

30th September. With these two activities Canvas making event was concluded.

(4) EXHIBITION OF CANVAS: Date:-01/10/2014

An exhibition of these canvas made by all the teams was carried out at the EC Department of SALITER campus.

Event started at 10.30 am on 1st of October. All the teams gave presentation on their respective canvas. External

faculty inspected these canvases and gave valuable advices to the students. A healthy participation from the students

and continuous support of the faculty members made it a successful event!
