Amity Teen Teaching 10 years later Slide 2 See Us Teach. 2008-2009 was an exciting year for Amity Teen teachers. It is our 5 th year going to John S. Martinez School in New Haven CT. We had 27 students begin the year as Official Amity Teachers We ended the year with 19 active students committed to attending each monthly trip to New Haven Slide 3 In the classroom Throughout the day at John S. Martinez School you can see Amity Teen Teachers interacting with students grade K-4 th primarily Our students would work with their host teachers to allow them to teach a concept or maybe time was spent with an Amity Teen Teacher reading to the class. Our students were often used as a resource to allow the struggling student at John S. Martinez School some quality one on one time with some one who could make their classroom experience a little bit better. Slide 4 Back at Home in Amity Students signed up during a month long membership drive that ended on Club Day Amity Students had to apply to become a Teen Teacher by producing an innovative biographical document which included a picture of themselves. The executive board reviewed the applications and delivered invitations/passes to those accepted students to the orientation Students attended a comprehensive orientation during school in preparations for their first visit to John S. Martinez School During the orientation students were made aware of the many facets of becoming a Teen Teacher Slide 5 Becoming an Amity Teen Teacher Basics in becoming a teachers aide were discussed during orientation and students were encouraged to make mental notes during their visits regarding the teachers methods classroom management How the teachers introduced new information ? How the teachers gathered the students? How the teacher developed a lesson/objective? Was the teacher very creative and very visual? Was the teacher more dependant on text and books? How did the teacher handle poor behavior? How did the teacher measure for understanding of the materials taught? How do you write a lesson plan? How should a Teen Teacher dress for success?
