The National Debate for Primary Schools was held earlier this year. This event is jointly organized every two years by the Tamil Peravai and the Ministry of Education. Our Tamil debators spoke confidently during all rounds and entered the Finals. They gave a tough fight to the defending Champions, Concord Primary School. The Tamil Debators displayed teamwork, persistence, resilience throughout this journey. The parents of the debators and an ex-parent of the school gave their full support for the pupils by coming up with the speeches together with the teachers and practised with the pupils on how to deliver their speeches confidently. The finals was held on 4 April and we emerged as champions. As the pupils spoke eloquently, it was a clear win for our school. This is the first time the finals of the debate series was telecast. It was telecast on Vasantham, a Mediacorp Channel, on the 26 April. At this point, the Tamil Department would like to thank all parents in the school for their continuous support in providing pointers for the speeches in every round, until the finals. MTL Fortnight Activities Chinese Department

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight is an exposure programme supported by MOE to enrich the pupils’ cultural and language environment to complement MTL teaching . The Chinese Department has organised a variety of activities for the pupils to participate during the MTL Fortnight from 8th to 14th July 2015. These fun and exciting cultural activities, namely Bean Artwork, Paper Cutting, Chinese Mask Painting, Chinese Knot Making, Chinese Painting and Chinese Calligraphy, enable our pupils to better appreciate their cultural roots while enjoying the learning of the Chinese Language. The P1 girls had fun using tiny beans to design simple yet impressive artwork. The P2 girls were taught the skills of cutting out patterns such as butterflies, trees, animals and even Chinese Characters on folded coloured paper. The P3 girls learned about the different Chinese masks associated with the Chinese Opera and had fun using different colours to paint the mask which represents a certain character in the Chinese Opera. The P4 girls tried their hands at Chinese knot making, creating decorative and colourful dolls and dragonflies. The P5 girls experimented with Chinese ink and brushes to paint beautiful pictures of flowers, goldfish or cat. The P6 girls attended calligraphy lesson to learn to hold the brush correctly and to write Chinese Characters with the proper strokes patiently. Prizes and certificates were presented to the top 5 winners from each class. The pupils’ excellent and creative pieces of work will be exhibited in the canteen. The pupils gave positive feedback about the programme and look forward to more of such interesting activities next year. It is heartening to note that the pupils have enjoyed and benefited from this enriching learning experience. Ms Chiang Ting Fung Teacher in charge

Singapore Youth Festival (Art Exhibition) 2015

The theme for the 49th Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Art Exhibition is “Artist: Past. Present. Future.”, showcasing artworks by primary school students in conjunction with SG50 celebrations this year. Eight of our Primary 6 pupils from the Art Club created the portrait of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew using toasted bread. The team, consisting of Jordan Yong (P6 Ix), Carmen Keng (P6 Ix), Leah Ng (P6 Ix), Christie Tan (P6 Ix), Kodi Sim (P6 Li), Elizabeth Deng (P6 Li), Sophie Montalban of (P6 Li) and Mariella (P6 Vi), spent long hours experimenting with the main medium, tools and different methods. Through this experience, the pupils displayed much enthusiasm, diligence and perseverance. We are glad that their efforts paid off, as the judging panel and curators were impressed with their artwork. The pupils received the “Certificate of Recognition with Special Mention”. Christie and Leah also represented the team in presenting the process of the art-making during the opening ceremony of the SYF Art Exhibition. Ms Rachel Lin Art Club (Teacher-in-charge)

A “TOAST” to Mr Lee! The late founding leader, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, had been Singapore’s “BREADwinner”, bringing about independence, diversity, stability, democracy and peace to the country. He is a strong representation of Singapore’s past, present and future. To our dear Mr Lee, for all that you have done, here’s a TOAST to you!

It was a victorious win for the gymnasts in the National Inter-schools Gymnastics Competition 2015 held in April. This year, we had a record number of gymnasts participating in the competition. The gymnasts proved their mettle and despite fierce competition, managed to win individual titles, clinch FIRST positions for the two ‘C’ division teams and a third position for the ‘B’ division team. The ‘A’ division girls also did not disappoint with their individual wins. Congratulations, girls! The good performance would not be possible had the girls not been disciplined with their rigorous training; not forgetting that they had to manage their studies at the same time. It was surely not easy! Credit should also certainly go to the gym coaches who worked hard to perfect the girls’ skills, and to all the parents who used their expertise to make the girls look presentable and beautiful with their makeup and hair and their glittery leotards. Great Team Spirit, IJ Gym!

CHOIR TRIP TO MALACCA Participation in various local performances and competitions each year has provided the IJ Choristers opportunities to stretch itself and nurture the passion in its members to perform and sing. During the recent June holidays, the choir participated in the choral festival ‘Cantus Angelicus’ held in the quaint and historical state of Malacca, Malaysia. Cantus Angelicus, which means 'Voices of Angels'. It was Asia's first ever choral festival for treble choirs. During the three days at the festival, the choir had the opportunity to sing, learn and interact with three other choirs. They were also given specialized training by two clinicians, Ms Robyn Lana and Ms Susanna Saw. During the masterclasses with these clinicians, the choir had their choral skills refined and perfected. On the last day of the festival, the choir applied their learning and was adjudicated in a Choral Assessment. The choir achieved a Gold B Award, the highest grade attained at the festival. The highlight of the festival for the members was the slumber party. During the party, the movie ‘Frozen’ was screened. The choir members shared their sinful snacks with each other and sang along to the movie’s popular tunes. The choral festival was truly an enjoyable experience for everyone!
