Who created ANA and what is itshistory?• Created by a small group of nurses in 1896 at

their first convention for the purpose of organizing a national professional association for nurses

• First called "Nurses Association Alumnae of the United States of Canada"

• Name was changed to "American Nurses Association" in 1911

History of ANA

• 1905- Nurse's Associated Alumnae joined with Great Britain and Germany to become the three charter members of the International Council of Nurses

• 1926- Tentative code of ethics was adopted by the American Nurses' Association

• 1950- ANA adopted a code of ethics for professional nursing

                          (ANA, 2011)

History continued... 

• 1964- House of Delegates recommended that ANA work toward baccalaureate education as the foundation for professional nursing practice

• 1977-ANA introduces health service bill to expand primary care services, and encourages utilization of nurse practitioners in cohort with physicians

• 1987- ANA recommends AIDS treatment and testing programs, research ADN community based health services

Why was the ANA created?

• For the purpose of organizing a national professional association for nurses

• To improve the standards of health and the availability of health care

• Advance the nursing profession by fostering high standard of nursing practice

• Promoting the rights of nursing in the work place

How ANA Practice Standards Relate  to Med/Surg and Pediatric Acute Care Nursing                                    -Esther Kolff

  

• The hospital which I work for uses the ANA practice standards for all our nursing care. 

• Throughout the year I need to document specific examples that show evidence that I meet  these standards in place, and bring it to my yearly evaluation.

• I am required to have Pediatric Advanced Life Support• Monthly competencies are required that show we understand the

guidelines set in place.

How ANA Practice Standards Relate to Cardiology Nursing                                          -Marcie Montgomery

  • Cardiology nurses are required to have certification in CPR,

ACLS, and demonstrate competency in EKG interpretation.• Annual evaluations are utilized to maintain standards of care

within  my professional practice and to ensure our practices are adapting with all the new technologies and discoveries.

• Incorporation of Munson’s mission statement into my practice by providing competent, high quality, holistic care to every patient every time.

How ANA Practice Standards Relate to Emergency Department Nursing                                                                         -Suanne Unger

• My position in the Emergency Department requires me to have specific areas of training.

Advance Cardiac Life Support Pediatric Advanced Life Support Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification

• The level of training and certifications in my practice give me a level of expertise, and with this, also the responsibility and accountability for my actions.

How ANA Practice Standards Relate to Perianesthesia Nursing

   -Sue Vansteel   

• The scope of Perianesthesia nursing involves age-specific assessment, diagnosis, intervention, and evaluation of individuals with the Perianesthesia continuum.

• Our practice is systematic, integrative and holistic and involve critical thinking, clinical decision making and inquiry

• Perianesthesia nursing is a competency based practice that integrates knowledge, attitude, skills, and behaviors to maintain consistent standards of care.
